The issue of social pressure of women’s actions was widely supported by the numerous commands by the narrator of the short story. Just a few simple commands like “This is how you iron your father’s khaki pants so that they don’t have a crease,” “Don’t squat down to play marbles—you are not a boy,” and “this is how to behave in the presence of men who do not know you very well” show exactly the belief of the narrator. The narrator along with many others in this society believe there are certain ways that a woman should and should not act. That claim is proven in so many more ways than just the narrator’s commands. My personal experience with this important topic also does more to support my claim. I believe it is very comical the social pressures of how a woman should perform are greatly more than how a man should…

Khakis Or Jeans? In a little town with not a large amount of school related discipline problems, there was a normal third grade girl. This girl was in love with this certain jean skirt so much she would wear it twice a week. It was not designer or a brand name, but soon problems started with the other “more popular” girls. Everyday this girl was bullied and pushed around because of her skirt. One day around her red ordinary locker, getting her math book out, she was shoved by a popular girl…

Stripes, chambray, polka-dots and khaki were predominant throughout the show, but in a fresh take fresh air with a fresh air. According to her, “We chose three ideas to expand on: chinos, stripes and the color pink. We then looked at them through the lens of all of our customers—the preppy ones, the tomboys, the girly-girls, the workwear guys, the traditionalists, the peacocks…” and she did not disappoint. The result was one of the most real and shopabble collections so far because it was fun…

because periods act like stop signs for the readers, without them there are no pauses for the readers to stop and catch their breath. This creates the effect that the mother’s instructions will never end. The run-on phrase format also creates a rhythm-like sound in “Girl”. Kincaid uses repetition of phrases to further that rhythm: this is how to sew on a button; this is how to make a buttonhole for the button you have just sewed on; this is how to hem a dress ... this is how you iron your…

The mise-en-scene is everything that goes into the frame, such as: color, props, costumes, setting, lighting, etc. The costumes of the film establish a time period and express the spirit of the small-town community that dwells in the island. An example of this is Captain Sharp. He is almost always in uniform throughout the film. His black and white attire with glasses and a slicked back hairstyle are a realistic outfit for the 1960’s, and shows a common stereotype of the dutiful, well-meaning…

“This is how you iron your father’s khaki pants so they don’t have a crease” (Kincaid 120). It is unusual for an author to write in the second-person because the style sounds like an instruction manual. Although, spite of that, Jamaica Kincaid uses this technique to her advantage in her short story, “Girl” to create the effect of a conversation between the narrator and reader in the form of a mother teaching her daughter to become a self-sufficient proper young lady. In “Girl,” the story is…

The biggest challenge is the dress code. It is challenging to identify clothing that is appropriate for school without one of the staff saying ¨Nope, you cannot wear that,¨ or “We have to cover the hole (or the holes) with duct tape.¨ The duct tape can ruin your clothes. The dress code is extremely complex. The school does not desire you to wear shirts that are too small, similar to crop tops, or shirts that are too revealing. They also do not want you to wear shirts with small straps, like…
