Personal Narrative: Stranger Things

Comparative Platform Essay
Netflix is something that’s rapidly become a part of society’s everyday life. It’s been taking over cable television, and shockingly taking over some people’s lives. Last weekend I visited my family’s log cabin in what’s known to be the middle of nowhere in rural Pennsylvania. Since there is absolutely no cable there, I knew I had to figure out a way to bring a system to watch the show that has been taking over my life, Stranger Things. We knew we could bring my computer and watch it from there, but we were well aware of how irritating it is to watch a show with another person through a computer screen versus a television. To escape squeezing next to one another sharing a little screen, my brother decided to bring

An old fashioned keyboard, with a USB wire. Although we were relieved when we figured out we could still watch Stranger Things, we hadn’t realized that not one neighbor of ours still owned a wired keyboard for a PC computer. The availability of this product was especially limited. We went to various different stores until finding what we needed. Even then, the Walmart clerk didn’t know if they still carry these keyboards. We were asked over and over in each store if we were sure we weren’t looking for a wireless keyboard. After a long manhunt for this old fashioned keyboard, we found one, and then we just had to figure out how to control it in comparison to our up-to-date controller we were so used to …show more content…
If I were to define a platform it would be almost anything that is compatible. I focus on the user experience and engagement since both altered from using the keyboard in place of the controller. Although the new device didn’t change much of the text, I found many noticeable modifications that were striking within the engagement and experience of the user. Firstly, the bulky keyboard was just impractical to bring around and travel with, compared to our compact remote controller. However, there was a positive aspect to the size of the keyboard as well. I noticed when Netflix asked me to sign in, I much rather type my username and password quickly on the large keyboard that I’m so familiar with. When comparing this interaction to typing it through a controller, the keyboard is actually shown on the television. This forces you to leisurely move through the keyboard shown on the screen which is considerably far away with extremely small characters until finding each and every letter or number, which can get very time consuming. The time difference it took to plug in my information with the keyboard in this situation shows the suitability of the keyboard in this occurrence. It took me under thirty seconds to type my information in on a keyboard, but with the controller it takes me almost a couple minutes. The keyboard portrayed on the television is inconvenient and hard to work with, as well as far

I evoke waking up every 5 minutes checking my blue IPod to see the time. Every time I woke up I would look outside my gelid, frosted window and see the sky darken to a faint violent. As the sky lightens, I would awaken even more. Just as the clock hit 7:30 A.M. sharp my alarm went off, “beep, beep, beep” desiring that I had gotten more sleep. I had opened my eyes like I had 50 cups of coffee, and jumping out of bed like a deer running from its predator.…

When I first heard that we were going to be doing another speech I honestly was not happy about it at all because like many of you I was ready for school to be done for the summer. I began to think about it though and instantly I had three books that popped into my head and I thought that this assignment was not going to be hard. The three books that came to mind was: Coming Back Stronger: Unleashing the Hidden Power of Adversity written by Drew Brees, Friday Night Lights written by Buzz Bissinger, and the last one was Through My Eyes: A Quarterback’s Journey written by Tim Tebow.…

Shirkey says “ screens generate distraction in a manner akin to second-hand smoke,” (213) he uses second-hand smoke to compare to “screens,” which refers to devices that students carry with them to class. Second-hand smoke is how he describes it, even the students that genuinely try to start focused and stay away from their devices get pulled into the pool of distraction because they see students around them drowning with what they see on the screen of their phone, laptops, etc. Elavia tells us that producers use the method of creating distractions in their shows to make them more appropriate for casting. Television platforms such as MTV and many other TV stations use different methods of distraction to keep the viewers from seeing what’s actually going on behind the cameras. They create what is ideal and not what is real.…

All the years I’ve lived on Elm Street I have never seen any sign of life in the house across the street, except a family that moved in and moved out only a few weeks later. It’s kind of mysterious actually, and I’ve always wanted to go up to it and walk in to explore. My parents have told me the things they have heard about the house, like there was an “old man whose wife passed away right there in the house, and her spirit still lurks”, maybe that’s why the families have never stayed for more than a month. Sometimes I’ve even caught myself staring at the house from my top window trying to spot things. I want to uncover the real truth about the house that I find myself overwhelmed.…
