In this week’s lesson I, learned about the process of Cold bluing. This is a process in which we, as future Gunsmiths will protect a weapon against rusting and repair a firearms cosmetic appearance. The purpose behind cold bluing firearms is improvement. The cold bluing process, is an inexpensive way to repair; older, rusting or blemished weapons. As a future Gunsmith, I will be able to not only provide protection, but also coloring on metalwork. When addressing the issue of a rusting weapon I, will start by removing the existing rust with either; steel wool or light grit sandpaper along with WD-40. After using the WD-40 and steel wool to wipe off the rusting I, can begin the regular bluing process. To begin bluing, I will wipe off any residue from the surface. Using a small butane lighter, I, can heat the area and open the pores of the metal. This will result in the metal having a better bluing finish. When applying the bluing I, will use either the steel wool with the bluing solution or cotton. The steel wool is used to even out the area. I, will need to apply the cold bluing with the steel wool multiple times until my desired result of a dark but dull or black in color finish is achieved. My usage of the steel wool or fine grit sandpaper will only be limited to the treated…
This week’s reading in Gunsmith Kinks was one that I believe could do a lot of good for someone new to shotgun choking. Before reading the words of V.M. Starr in our reading this week I had next to no knowledge about how to choke a shotgun. Mr. Starr went on to explain that “his first experience choking a shotgun was in an old blacksmith shop on the farm in Ohio where he was born”. He stated that he and his father “took a shot-out muzzle loading rifle and bored it to about 24 gauge and worked a…

In this paper, I will explain how I perceived the article Gunsmithing Requires Innovation, written by Paul Mazan; American Gunsmith April 2015. In the last 100 years firearms manufacturing, has evolved in leaps and bounds. Like any other industry many manufacturers have come and gone. The issue gunsmiths and hobbyists alike run into is that once a manufacturer has been closed for decades upon decades it can become near impossible to locate replacement parts, or donor guns that match weapons that…
In this week’s reflection video, I, learned about the weapon printing design done by the process of hydro-graphics. In the video a rifle stock is used with a Dip Wizard hydrographic kit to add a camouflage pattern. The Dip Wizard’s Kit just like other hydrographic kits uses a technique of applying a printed pattern such as; camouflage or any other pattern to a 3-dimensional object. This process goes by the terms; hydro-graphics, hydro-dipping, image transferring, immersion and water print…
In the article a single shot Roberts was checked for accuracy by conducting load testing with different powders and projectiles. To ensure its accuracy, the hanger was glass bedded and screws were fitted for barrel tension. As a future gunsmith, I know that I should test out my work when I, complete the repairs on any weapon, so it will be beneficial to not only have membership at a gun range but also purchase or handload ammunition to conduct test with the weapons. As a future Gunsmith it’s…
In this short paper I will go over my thoughts on the article provided for this week’s article summary, Diagnosing Hunting Rifle Accuracy, Part One, American Gunsmith May 2015, by Wendell Dwight Deaner. I think I’ll just begin by saying that this was one article that I feel will really help me in my personal life. I’ve had some serious problems getting some of my small caliber weapons to maintain accuracy, so I’ll be looking to implement some of what I learned from it to solve my issues. Mr.…
With there being not that many workers there would only be Captain John Smith was the leader for them to work. He inspired some of the colonists to work for the colony to survive. Then after a while Captain Smith was sent back to England. The Early Jamestown: Why Did So Many Colonists Die? Document it states, “Captain John Smith who provided much needed leadership was sent back to England” with Captain John Smith not being able to lead them, and work hard for their food so they could have enough…
Larger companies save money through bulk purchases and this allows them to get better prices. The small dealer may still make sales due to the manufacture either limiting or halting sales to chain stores and primarily catering to a customizing or sporting goods shop. A Gunsmith that deals in weapons has an advantage of spending more time with a client and can make recommendations to them about modifications and ammunition for target shooting or hunting. The customer will place trust in that…
