I find it extremely interesting that most teachers were not able to give the correct answer to the fraction problem. Fractions may take some time to understand, but a teacher should be able to understand and implement a problem regarding fractions. Also, does putting a fraction into story form confuse teachers and so they are not able to put in the correct way? I believe that teachers need to make sure they are not getting confused with connecting the symbols to elements in the story and then connecting them the wrong way. It may also be the way the education system in America teaches mathematics which hinders students from properly knowing how to put a problem like that into story form. There is obviously something wrong with our system and…

Module 5 Reflection Mathematics Instruction for Elementary Teachers has been a class that I have learned more than I thought I ever would have. This class gave me the ability to look at what I was doing and how I was doing it, in different ways. Standards I have found throughout my years of teaching that the standards have given me a guide. I know where my students have come from and where I need to take them. I have always tried to tell parents who were not on board with our state common core…

Determining Subject Matter I worked with the CT to identify the topic that would be appropriate for this assignment. After reviewing the upcoming lessons and considering the timeline, we agreed that I would teach the students about coordinate planes, including the parts of the plane, how to plot points, find the distance between points, and reflect points across axes. The timing of this topic is fitting since the students just completed a unit on number lines, integers, and rational numbers.…

To enter science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) high schools, students must acquire the desire and foundational skills for success in science at an early age. Science instruction is often overlooked in elementary school. Reasons include an overemphasis on literacy and mathematics due to standards-based testing and teachers’ lack of professional development in teaching science. This literature review employed a case study design to examine the impact and the current standings…

1.) I would use a longitudinal study to test children in this elementary school over time. Since an observational study is based on collecting data from samples, I would design a questionnaire asking children how much time they spend on mathematical learning applications (math apps) and some representative math problems for testing their mathematical reasoning skill. More specifically, children are going to be asked by questionnaires repeatedly (6 times in three years). The independent variable…

Mathematics is still considered as a burden subject to learn by some students. However, they need to take it because mathematics is one of the requisite subjects that students must accomplish in their study, at least from elementary school to high school levels. That is why some students feel tortured every time they meet a mathematics class. Learning mathematics is looking at students’ abilities to use and apply what they comprehend to solve a problem. It is not about providing practice on rote…

“Improving Elementary American Indian Students' Math Achievement with Inquiry-Based Mathematics and Games” describes a 2008-2009 ethnographic case study of four fifth grade classrooms with varying levels of Native American student enrollment (Stone & Hamann, 2012). Dr. McMillan (2016) refers to ethnography as “the quintessential qualitative approach” (p.312). Stone contends that it remains necessary to “account for what was actually happening with American Indian and other children in these…

So many people have different interpretations of mathematics, in elementary school we learn that if you have 5 apples and your neighbor takes 3 away you are only left with 2. In middle school we were shown that there are 360 degrees in a circle and a numerous variety of rules and theorems that seemed only relevant for that section. We learned about sine, cosine, and tangent, which were chiseled in our brain. In high school we were introduced to things I didn’t know existed, such as derivatives,…

Education, eighty-one percent of Asian-Americans and seventy-one percent of Caucasian students do not attend high schools that offer a complete education in mathematics (US Department of Education). Studies show that students are not pursuing the STEM education because they are not introduced to applied math and science programs at an early stage in life. When a STEM program is introduced in elementary school, children gain interest in STEM education at a faster rate and gain the edge to…
