Aisles separate the three columns of chairs. The temple was full, yet it was very quiet. The inside of the temple is also modest; white walls with gold accents. There are small colored-glass pained windows around the entire room, unlike what I have seen in Christian churches, these were beautiful depictions of lotus flowers, with no hint of spiritual stories or leaders depicted in them. Though there were many lights in the ceilings, and few small windows around the room, the feeling overall was that of open natural light. The altar consists of three dome like cutouts in the wall that hold 6 gold frames, containing from left to right the images of Babaji (Lahiri Mahasaya’s guru), Lahiri Mahasaya, Jesus, Krishna, Paramahansa Yogananda, and Sri Yukteswar. Six tall candles sit in front of the pictures on a mantle that also has gold accent. A beautiful flower arrangement sits on a table in the front of the altar, and off to the left is a chair that is roped off and a framed picture of Paramahansa Yogananda at the shrine. On the right is a podium from which the lecture is…

The Tamil Tigers were based in northern Sri Lanka. Founded in 1976, the Tamil Tigers are widely regarded to have been one of the most organized and efficient terrorist organizations in history, their soldiers ranging from five to ten thousand guerillas. was seen as unusual by many and sadly did not remain prominent in Theravada Buddhism due to the lack of support from the government. Even though forest monks are currently scarce, their practice of meditation encouraged differences from traditional Buddhist practice. Additionally, women in Sri Lanka are the center of the household, influencing family members and neighbors. Based on my experience it is typical for Sinhalese women in a neighborhood to socialize daily. By using this opportunity to get women together to socialize, Sarvodaya can imbed facilitators to lead discussions on gender and conflict. The first step is to brainstorm what identity means to the women. This will take place over four sessions to prevent overwhelming women and to give…

Disregarding Sri Lankan culture, the aid groups rushed in with their PTSD diagnostic manuals that don’t match with how Sri Lankans experience trauma. Few groups even bothered to actually register with the government or ask what kind of help the country needed. The aid groups spiraled into chaos where “rivalries broke out between counseling groups over which populations would receive which services” (Watters, 2010, p. 78). Making things even worse, what Watters termed “parachute researchers”…
