Dr. Stallbaumer-Beishline March 14, 2017 Liberal Arts Seminar 110-01 The Simplification of Human Tragedy Edward Zwick's fast-paced and sympathetic interpretation of two brother’s very different takes on what it means to survive, (based on the book by famed Sociologist Nechama Tec,) appears at face value as just another war film full of violence and thick accents. But even with the perfect backdrop for gut-wrenching tragedy and dramatic wartime battles, “Defiance”’s script can’t quite decide whether to let the audience come up with their own opinions, or to spell it out for them. By the end of the film, this ragtag team of anti-heroes just aren't poignant enough to truly effect an audience in the way Zwick intended.…

I really liked the movie Defiance. Tuvia Bielski was a very brave leader. He was able to lead not only his brothers, but 1200 other Jews to safety before the end of the war. I found it amazing that in the movie he just happened upon many of the Jews he helped. In all of the accounts I read on him, he was more organized and willing to go out of his way to get the Jews. I don’t think in many cases, the Jews just randomly showed up or found their way to the Bielski partisans. I also read that both…

Camus’ philosophy adopts the third choice. His alternative to suicide or a false belief in some metaphysical or religious rationality is to live life in rebellion (Aronson 9). He proposes that living in defiance of the bereft condition of humanity is to live with integrity. Being fully conscious of life’s absurdity but carrying on with vigor and in earnest: this is how Camus proposes to make life worthwhile. By being aware of the human condition, Camus claims that one is taking ownership of it.…

Fighter and Defiance are both films that portray a story of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust. Each of their stories present similarities in their representations of Jewish resistance. For example, they both involve characters that first find the desire to fight from their thirst for vengeance. They both also inadvertently make non-resistors seem less heroic than those who did fight. However, there are also differences and I will mention one; Fighter goes into further depth on establishing…
