The Defiance Movie Analysis

The ‘Defiance,’ is a film about 4 brothers (Tuvia, Zus, Asael, Aron) who escape from the Nazi’s and live in the forest where they end up making a Camp for other Jews who escaped. They fought in what they believed in, however never took recognition of their achievements. It is valuable for a historian studying the Holocaust to a certain extent. However, as it is a feature film in the genre thriller the reliability is questionable, as it exaggerates many parts of the movie for cinematic purposes and action. Whilst history is about the accurate record of a whole series of past events with a particular person or thing, the ‘Defiance,’ which was originally about brothers and their story about surviving in the forest has been revered through history …show more content…
This is demonstrated in the end, when the camp goes under attack by the Germans and they have to cross a swamp to reach safety. They are air raided, bombed and many died, while trying to get out. There were also tank ships that stroke them with bombs and grenades, upon their arrival on dry land. The Germans did everything to eliminate the Jews, during the Holocaust. However, research suggests that this was exaggerated, and the reliability is questionable due to this. It is considered that they were attacked, but long after they left the camp. As shown in the movie, their was no rearguard action in reality. Additionally, there was no conflict between the Nazi’s and Jews, when they reached dry land. This was all for cinematic purposes and action, as this is a feature film in the genre of thriller. Therefore the ‘Defiance,’ is accurate to a certain extent for a historian studying the Holocaust, as it depicts the way the Jews fought their battles, for survival and freedom. Nevertheless the reliability is questionable as their was exaggeration and bias within the

Dehumanization Among Prisoners When considering the indescribable events that took place during World War II, often times people conclude that the guards of the concentration camps were the only ones who dealt out the inexplicable cruelty to the innocent Jewish prisoners of World War II. This statement later proves to be completely fictional. Elie Wiesel, writer of the memoir, Night describes the unthinkable injustice dealt to the prisoners by the German officers, but also the inconceivable: the dehumanization of prisoners by other prisoners. In his memoir, Wiesel goes beyond explaining the horrors of Hitler and the Nazi regime, but further explains how the prisoners and victims did nothing to rebel or perhaps even stay united as prisoners.…

Paulo Freire once said: “Dehumanization, although a concrete historical fact, is not a given destiny but the result of an unjust order that engenders violence in the oppressors. Which in turn dehumanizes the oppressed.” During the holocaust, the Jews, and anyone in the camps, were forced to do hard labor without any breaks, without being fed hardly any food, and in terrible conditions. They were abused, maltreated, downtrodden etc.. by the natzis, kapos, and the S.S officers. There were nuremberg laws placed on the Jews and they couldn’t do anything without being afraid of dieing.…

In my analysis I will focus on the work of Julian Kulski in the book The Color of Courage. Kulski explains life as a ten year-old Boy Scout during World War II who so desperately wanted to fight against the Germans after they invaded his country of Poland. The purpose of this book is to give readers an inside look of what it was like to live during the war. The book is composed of many diary excerpts and actual pictures at the age of sixteen to help aid his post-traumatic stress. This book was written to describe the conditions and everything Kulski experienced in Warsaw.…

Complacency is Cooperation Throughout the late 1930s and early 1940s, the citizens of Europe looked on as millions of Jewish people were killed, segregated, and discriminated against. The world may never know the exact reasons people did not intervene, but conclusions can be drawn from the information available. This issue is addressed in Elie Wiesel’s memoir, Night, on numerous occasions. Despite some people believing that no one interfered because the people of Europe were afraid, Weisel demonstrates that there were other justifications given by the communities living directly outside some of the worst concentration camps. To begin, there must be a basic understanding of the situation.…

Ender’s Game Adaptation Movie Review Gavin Hood’s Adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game is an adventurous thrill ride. Ender Wiggin played by Asa Butterfield, is a third that was not really appreciated for being the third child in his family, a third that ended up being a successful recruit for the Battle School, where Ender is being pushed to his breaking point with all of the lies they are feeding him. It seems this movie took a lot of time and effort to create, with all of the scenes and technology upgrades. This movie is a good adaptation to the book because it brings all of the action moments in the book to the screen.…

Within the time preceding and during the holocaust there were instances of Jewish resistance, though they seemed few and far between. The instances of resistance were primarily behind the scenes and subliminal, mainly consisting of passive resistance to segregation. In addition to this there was outright resistance though very limited primarily during deportations and city cleansing. The final form of resistance that was practiced was the act of resisting death through hiding and escape. These three ideas were gathered from the two readings, Ordinary Men by Christopher R. Browning and Between Dignity and Despair: Jewish Life in Nazi Germany by Marion A. Kaplan.…

The Nazi’s extermination and torture of Jews and other’s lasted for a period of twelve years. “The principal images you see today of the Holocaust are of barbed wire, disease-ridden barracks, malnourished prisoners, gas chambers and crematoria’s.” (Levi, 535) This is different from the atomic bombings because the effects of the bombs were still being seen seventy years later. The value of the survivor testimonies from these tragic events in history is to remember the effects that Warfare has on civilian population, it is important to record each survivors experience as to add to the big picture of the brutality of men of power before the survivors are forgotten, and remember what can happen if tyranny and technology are not kept in check by the morals of the…

    1. Over a hundred people were involved in the production of this film. The entire cast and crew are not given equal credit in most films. The majority of the camera crew and other production workers are not given as much credit for their work as the actors and director/producers, even though they play a huge role in the development and production of the movie. The making of a huge blockbuster like ‘The Departed’ involves the use of an immense crew.…

I really liked the movie Defiance. Tuvia Bielski was a very brave leader. He was able to lead not only his brothers, but 1200 other Jews to safety before the end of the war. I found it amazing that in the movie he just happened upon many of the Jews he helped. In all of the accounts I read on him, he was more organized and willing to go out of his way to get the Jews.…
