For two months, as I followed every conceivable lead, Caulder grew nastier, fuming constantly about my incompetence. “What the fuck have you been doing with your time?” he bellowed. “Do you have any idea the flack the department will take, that I will take, if it comes out we killed a guitar player while trying to dispatch an ambassador’s daughter? I’m not letting you jeopardize my reputation—or my retirement.” “It’s not my fault. You taught her every trick she knows.” “She switched sides, Mark. This is a simple targeted killing.” In training we learned that assassination equaled murder. The U.S. Government did not condone the killing of someone who disagreed with policy. On the other hand, a “targeted kill” was more akin to self-defense in advance than murder. In Caulder’s mind, Sarah had become an enemy combatant and fair game. “You’re letting the fact that she’s a woman cloud your judgment.” Caulder’s voice seethed with venom. “This all harks back to Judith. Do I need to put someone else on the case?” I shook my head. “I can handle it. Just a little more time.” “One month. I plan to retire with a clean slate.” Back in my cubicle, I searched my desk for another roll of antacids. That bastard would bring up Judith again. Dragging my thoughts from the past, I stared at the photos in Griffon’s file. Recently I’d spent so much time staring at her picture I felt I knew her. I no longer called her “Griffon.” She’d become “Sarah.” At night I’d wake up drenched in sweat, tormented…

On the Should of a Stranger The sound of my shovel breaking the ground is the only noise that reaches my ears. The warm tears running down my cheeks, the only thing I feel. I slow down my breathing to match the rhythm of the steady chink of my shovel as it enters the dirt, almost reaching a hypnotic state. Anything to keep my mind off what is happening. Chink. An image of me on my knees beside the road flashes before my eyes, and with it comes a searing pain. My shovel misses its mark and…

After Joe left the small garret that I shared with Herbert Pocket in London, I decided that I must leave at once to inform Mr. Jaggers of my need to visit Estella back at Ms. Havisham’s house. As I was about to step foot into his office, this young girl wrapped in a scarf with a large floppy hat ran up to me and stopped me in my tracks. She quickly asked me if I wouldn’t mind joining her for tea, and before I had time to reply, she pulled me into a tea shop nearby. As we stepped into the shop,…

A nerve cell is also called a motor neuron, which is made from a cell body, an axon and axon terminals. The cell body contains a nucleus and dendrites that receive the signals and send it down the axon that is covered in myelin sheath. The axon terminals are connected to the muscles creating a neuromuscular junction. This is where the signal is relayed to the muscle. There are two groups of motor neurons: upper and lower.
