Athletes Should Be Paid Essay

The amount of hate that famous people receive is absurd. People direct their anger towards these athletes just because of the large sums of money they earn for what they feel like is doing nothing. These people fail to realize how hard working people like athletes can be. Athletes struggle just like everybody else, but the difference is that the athletes are making more of a difference in the world than many other human beings. Because they serve as great role models, they are “elite” human beings, and the organizations that they’re involved in wouldn’t be the same without them, athletes deserve the pay and the value that is put upon them.

Athletes are deserving of their pay because they’re looked up to, as role models and leaders.

To put it into perspective, the NCAA did a study and were able to estimate that “only 1.7 percent of college football players and 0.08 percent of high school players play at any professional level” (Morgan 1). Notice how the statistics say “any professional level.” This doesn’t even necessarily include the athletes with the high-paying salaries that are being talked about. This means that the 0.8% of high school players diminishes to even a smaller number. These athletes are special human beings who work hard to get there. A great point made by one author was that “These athletes are not directly replaceable. There is only one best” (Kevin 1). One would think that if they were better than everyone else in the world at something, that they deserve praise and success just like the athletes. People get angry because it’s not them that are in that position. Too much blame is put on the athletes, and it isn’t really fair. One famous football player named Vince Lombardi once said that “Leaders aren’t born they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal” (Megliofitness 1). Athletes don’t get into the places that they are by doing nothing. Throughout their whole lives, they practice to be the best, and don’t give up. The funny part is that they work harder to get where they are than most people probably work to get to where they are, and yet they still receive ridicule. Athletes deserve the pay they get because of the sheer amount of talent they have, but also because of the amount of money they earn for whoever they play

Most college athletes aren’t good enough to make it to the next level, so why should they be paid to play a sport that they have no future in? Besides, many athletes get scholarships for tuition, room and board, and textbooks. They aren 't actually given money, but getting those things free is a lot like being paid (Cambio 7). Most of their schooling is paid for by scholarships . They do not deserve to be paid to go to school to get an education to go make money at a job.…

It’s unfortunate and disrespectful that many criticize them without real reasons. People are looking at what they are making, but avoiding why they are making that amount. NBA players have a bigger impact in our society, and their salaries reflect that impact. It’s common sense that when you contribute more, you get more in return. Professional athletes like NBA players are paid millions for a reason.…

A lot of people would disagree with me when I say soldiers shouldn’t make more money than athletes, but i assure you I can turn them into believers. It would take too much money for the government to pay soldiers as much money as athletes are paid. Also anybody can sign up to be a soldier. It takes a lot of skill and dedication to be an athlete. Lastly if the government started giving people a lot of money everybody will want to join.…

Should College Athletes Get Paid “As a professional athlete a lot is going to be said about you, but I just try to move forward and try to achieve my goals”-(LeBron James). “In college I never realized the opportunities available to a pro athlete. I’ve been given the chance to meet all kinds of people, to travel and expand my financial capabilities, to get ideas and learn about life, to create a world apart from basketball”-(Michael Jordan). The issue about college athletes playing sports is that they don’t get paid for the hard work that they do playing. People may also argue the fact that these student athletes can and probably will get hurt playing their sport and they should get paid. This is a terrible argument because the student is playing the sport at their own risk and they know this. Just because a student athlete gets injured is no reason to start paying them money. When the athlete takes the scholarship to play the sport they know that they are at risk of injury. If the athlete does get hurt it is not the colleges’ or the NCAA’s responsibility to begin paying the athlete money.…

With coaches making upwards of $7 million dollars a year and television ratings for its game coverage skyrocketing, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has had its fair share of good times in the 21st century. The association has also had its worst times as well, “the NCAA has never been more vulnerable and on the defensive with regards to it policies and practices, especially its reliance on the age-old characterization of college athletes as “amateurs” who are first and foremost “student-athletes” and the limits its members have collectively imposed on the remuneration these players receive” (Sanderson 115). Plain and simple, the NCAA does not want to dish out money to players to compensate for their play time. The NCAA views the athlete only as that amateur and not as an employee of the association.…

They have worked their whole lives, since they were able to walk, to run, some even before they knew what all this work was even worth. Many college athletes put in work from a very tender age, then continue to work their entire lives to have the opportunity to play in college and one day possibly have the opportunity to play the sport they do not only love, but something that they sacrifice for on a daily basis thought-out their lives. The on-going debate of college athletes being compensated for their time and long “job-like” hours that athletes put into their athletic careers is a heated one, that has resulted in many programs filing complaints that student-athletes deserve to be paid for their work. Of course there are always two sides…

Unfortunately what critics lack to admit is that normal student’s face these same issues, being involved in on campus clubs and other ordeals those normal students face no one truly has a lot of time to get a job. Athletes have built in connections that non-athletes do not have, so being on an athletic team is by far more advantageous then simply being a student. So why should student athletes be the only students benefitting monetarily for their hard work (College Athletes). No one is enslaving nor, “forcing these athlete-students to play football. Don't hand me the garbage about it being their only opportunity in life.…

“People complain that professional athletes get paid too much, but what they don’t understand is that we need a lot of money because we spend a lot of money,” is a quote from Patrick Ewing, a famous NBA star. His quote directly shows that athletes are being paid too much. For example athletes get paid a great deal more than the working class. They also get paid way more than surgeons, who save lives. There are also orphanages who barely make enough money to keep the kids safe.…
