The portrayal of the black man in Eastern Africa as well as the Arabs living in Eastern Africa continued to place the white man of the British Empire at the top of the hierarchy of races. Burton in his work, Zanzibar; and Two Months in East Africa, described Zanzibar as an uncivilized and unsanitary place inhabited by Arabs, blacks, and Europeans. The Arabs were given credit by Burton as having planned out the majority of the streets, buildings, and homes. However, Burton described the place as modern owing its existence to that of the imperial influence of the Europeans as the Arabs will build as soon as and as extensively as materials allow. The Arab build, as described by Burton was a mere “dicky” or a clean front that concealed the unsightly interior that lacked the superior European influence. The rear of the dicky contained a foul dense mass of shed-like homes where the poor and the slaves “pigged” together. According to Burton, because of racial superiority the best houses in Zanzibar were those of the white European merchants who would soon bring healthiness to Zanzibar with their superior imperial influences of construction and sanitation. Burton continued to build the case for the hierarchy of race with a description of eastern area of Zanzibar where the wealthy natives and a few foreigners reside.
