Brazil is a satirical dystopian film directed by Terry Gilliam that centers on Sam Lowry and his attempts to escape his monotonous life with the woman of his dreams, Jill Layton. The setting for the movie is a futuristic society that is controlled entirely by an oppressive government that is reminiscent of George Orwell’s 1984. Throughout the entirety of the film, ugly exposed ducts are shown in nearly every scene, hanging low and disrupting any sort of elegance that may otherwise exist. The ducts serve as a way of connecting everyone directly back to the State, creating a web of interconnectivity that is proprietary to the extent that only certified technicians can even touch them (a fact that is akin to Apple’s level of propriety today). I believe that the ducts in Brazil symbolize two themes: technology gone wrong and the omnipresent nature of the State itself.…
The film Monty Python and the Holy Grail was a satire of the King Arthur time period. There were a few themes in medieval literature that had been mocked in the movie compared to the real stories. For one theme, the English were made to look like buffoons or horrible people. Serious situations were turned into jokes in the movie as well. Ideals such as beauty and bravery were tested in the movie compared to the book. Monty Python and the Holy Grail was made to completely make fun of the real…
When we watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail I noticed a few theme that the movie had touched on that interested me. So for it to have some themes being satirized in it is no surprise, but the ones i want to talk about are some very memorable jabs at previous examples of epics. The themes I will talk about is historical reference, supernatural elements, and king arthur’s court. The story is based in the middle ages before the Norman Conquest in England, they actually reference this by having…
Leonardo DiCaprio speaking Shakespearean dialogue, love or lust, and illegal drugs, become a strange product when put together, but are the base of Luhrmann’s film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. The adaptation Romeo + Juliet is a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s original, but set in a modern day Miami like city. The characters use guns instead of swords, but still speak in Shakespearean English. This film’s modernization of everything except the dialogue caused it to be misunderstood. However,…
Blaustein entertained himself with professional wrestling, traveling across the country to film would-be grapplers on their way up. The film also includes former superstars on the skids and legends on their way out. Blaustein’s film is sincere; everything else is up for grabs. Blaustein leaves the footage to draw conclusions and assign significance, always returning to his own question: What kind of man makes a living running another man 's head against a turnbuckle? All kinds, the film argues,…
