(REDD) Indonesia is the world 's fifth-ranking greenhouse gas emitter, coming in just behind Russia and India. (WRI) This year, the country has experienced nearly 100,000 fires so far this year. This past September and October and in the last few weeks of the dry season, there has been more fire activity than usual. The smoke plumes are so big they can be seen from space. On several of these days, emissions from Indonesian forest fires exceeded entire output of emissions from the US.(WRI) Thinking about the careless and unfeeling technique of slash and burn gives us many reasons to be worried. The products obtained from deforestation wind up in almost 50% of products on the market and most of us use and benefit from these products on a daily basis. This is not true for Indonesians. The heavy smog creates health problems such as respiratory illnesses and aggravates existing heart or lung disease, like asthma, and sometimes produces heart failure. It also results in irritation of the eyes, nose and throat in healthy individuals. Corruption is part of the equation when we consider deforestation.
