gives an example of how a blind man does not know color and how a mild mannered man cannot understand the motive of revenge. Hume also creates an exception to his belief that all simple ideas come from impressions. He gives the example of a shade of blue. If a person has seen all the shades of blue except one when you present them a spectrum of blue with that one shade missing, they can easily use their imagination to form an idea for that shade. Although they get the idea of the shade, it is not formed through an impression. I actually agree with Hume in that you can form an idea for the blue shade without ever experiencing it. Even though Hume terminates this idea of the blue shade and calls it insignificant I think it is very important. It basically disproves his whole notion of not being able to derive ideas without impressions. If it is possible to get an idea for the shade of blue without ever originating it from an impression can’t we just as easily form other ideas without any impressions. I think a single example is enough to refute an assertion. The reason I think Hume is wrong is because if a person can come up with missing shade of blue they will obviously be able to do it for any other color. Because a mind can come up with the shades of different colors, I see no reason that we should limit this only to vision. We can just as easily have an idea of missing taste, sound and smell.
