Summary
Different Shades of Blue go over the topic of depression. Depression is defined as feelings of severe despondency and dejection. The author Erica Westly goes in depth as to describe how it is known to therapists that, “Men and women experience events such as mental illnesses differently.”(p30) However, when it comes to diagnosing patient’s gender is no longer viewed as a vital component to which kind of medicine to diagnose. The Brooklyn author has been a freelance writer for seven years and her work has appeared in publications such as the New York Times, Slate, Esquire, and Nature. Her most recent feature was for Popular Science about the 2014 Winter Olympics. The educational background of Erica is quite impressive she has bachelors in Biochemistry from Malbro College and a Masters in Neuroscience from Case Western Reserve University. The information found gives me reason to believe that the author does have knowledge on the subject.Unfortunatley in the paper although the writer does have some flaws. For example the experiment that showed the Rate of Serotonin for such a complex experiment the sample size only consisted of fifteen males and females.
