The invention of a cell phone was to bring people closer by enabling them to communicate with others across large distances however it has resulted in people ignoring real life interactions as a whole. The repetition of the phone islands, the slouched figures and the separation of the islands all contribute to the main idea of loneliness and help create irony. The contrast between the true purpose of a phone and what it has done to the western community is expertly shown by highlighting certain aspects of the painting. Therefore through the use of hyperbole and contrast the artist is able to create a sense of irony adding to the satirical mood. Which effectively portrays the western american culture as lonely and separated due to their own technological advancements. Lastly, Pawel Kuczynski expertly uses symbolism in this painting to show the audience that the western culture has become too reliant on technology as their source of human interaction resulting in separation. There is a lot of symbolism present in this painting such as the islands shaped as phones. These islands represents the separation that has been created by the cel phones, each person has their own island where they are looking down oblivious to their surroundings.
