(2004) and Kleiner et al. (2005) assed multiple independent features for the diagnosis of steatohepatitis and did not just based their findings on a single histological feature. The lesion due to accumulation of fat in the form of triglycerides within hepatocytes is termed as steatosis and the minimum criteria for diagnosing NAFLD the presence of > 5% steatotic hepatocytes in a liver tissue section (Brunt and Tiniakos, 2010). On the other hand, the minimal criteria for the histological diagnosis of adult NASH includes steatosis, hepatocyte injury, usually in the form of ballooning, and lobular inflammation, typically localized in acinar zone 3 while fibrosis is not a required diagnostic feature of NASH (Brunt and Tiniakos, 2010). According to Brunt and Tiniakos (2010), hepatocellular injury in NASH can take the form of ballooning, apoptosis, or lytic necrosis. Brunt and Tiniakos (2010) reported that ballooned hepatocytes can be observed as enlarged, swollen, rarefied, pale cytoplasm and, show a hyperchromatic nucleus, usually with a prominent nucleolus. Apoptotic bodies are acidophilic and lobular inflammation is usually mild which consists…

Biopsy proof was not obtained. Statistical analysis The optimal threshold for diagnosis of hepatic steatosis on contrast-enhanced CT was determined by Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curve and calculated sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV) and accuracy over a range of possible liver attenuation diagnostic threshold, L-S attenuation diagnostic threshold or combined. The maximal overall accuracy value was chosen. Presence of focal fat…

iron-containing siderophores. In mammalian liver, LCN2 protects against inflammation, infection, injury and other forms of cellular stress. Because previous work indicated that LCN2 is a key modulator of hepatic fat metabolism and homeostasis, we performed a comparative profiling of the proteins and lipids of wild type (WT) and Lcn2-deficient mice fed either standard chow or a methionine- and choline-deficient (MCD) diet. Label-free proteomics and 2D-DIGE protein expression profiling identified…

No statistically significant differences were detected in the creatinine levels of the hydrodynamically injected mice and the non-treated control mice at the analyzed time points. No statistically significant differences were found in the mean ALAT values of gene transfer receiving mice and the non-transfected control either. Generally, the plasma ALAT levels of the mice increased gradually throughout the study. However, as…

The Leptin receptor, Ob-R, is a member of the class-1 cytokine 25 receptor family and was originally demonstrated in hypothalamic neurons. In animal studies, the main role of leptin seems to be prevention of lipid accumulation in non-adipose sites, such as the myocardium, skeletal muscle, pancreas, and liver. Initially leptin was characterized as a regulator of body weight and energy expenditure. In NASH patients serum leptin levels are increased compared with gender and BMI matched controls.…
