Semi-structured interviewing is guided only in the sense that some form of interview guide, such as the matrix described below is prepared beforehand, and provides a framework for the interview. The majority of questions are created during the interview, allowing both the interviewer and the person being interviewed the flexibility to probe for details or discuss issues. Less intrusive to those being interviewed as the semi-structured interview encourages two-way communication. Those being interviewed can ask questions of the interviewer. Confirms what is already known but also provides the opportunity for learning. Often the information obtained from semi-structured interviews will provide not just answers, but the reasons for the answers. Interviewers can conduct a number of practice interviews with each other and/or with a few community members, to become familiar with the questions, and get feedback on their two-way communication skills. The person was chosen.…
3.5 Semi-Structured Interviews An interview is basically a verbal conversation between two people with the aim of collecting relevant data for the purpose of research. According to McNamara (1999), interviews are particularly useful for acquiring the story behind a participant’s experiences while the interviewer can pursue in depth information around the topic. Besides, there are underlying assumptions that that the non-verbal acts are more real and basic while the verbal acts are epiphenomenal…
Interview Questions Research interviews take place when there are two or more people. These people have a conversation and the conversation has a purpose. The purpose is based on the topic that the interviewer wants to discuss which is based on the purpose or the topic of the research. The interviewer has to establish trust with the respondent. The respondent has to agree to answer the questions and listen to what the interviewer is asking. Interviews are separated by types which include…
The first method I will be using is interviews. Interviews are a widely used method of research with children and it helps one obtain children’s own perspectives (Greig, Taylor, & MacKay, 2013, p.160). Specifically, I would like to conduct semi-structured interviews with my participants. A semi- structured interview involves questions that cover a large amount of topics but allows room for the interviewee’s own ideas to develop (Greig, Taylor, & MacKay, 2013, p.160). Interviews will be…
Interviews will be the primary means to collect the data for this study. Each participant will be interviewed based on an interview guide (see Appendix B: Interview Guide). Because of the complexity of meeting the participant more than once semi-structured interviews will be the most convenient to collect the data (Doody & Noonan, 2013). Semi-structured interviews will help the researcher to develop a keen understanding of the experience of the undocumented immigrants. The interviews will…
This will be achieved through a structured interview where a number of open-ended questions will be asked in order to gain accurate quality data (see Appendix A). Setting and Sample The setting of the research will be in the Ottawa…
Semi-structured interview The interview allows implicit and unobservable beliefs of teachers to be made explicit. Interview seems to be an appropriate tool for eliciting verbal commentaries, which many teacher cognition researchers have employed in a semi-structured format because open-ended questions allow interviewees to respond to questions by expressing in their own words (Borg, 2006). According to Borg (2006), semi-structured interview is common to employ when a researcher aims to capture…
In order to gather data onto the study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with elementary school teachers, parents and students. All participants were asked questions pertaining to homework to get a clear understanding of the benefits and/or impact on student success. Semi-structured interviews allowed for deviation from questions per the interviewer and explore the topic more in-depth (Houser, 2014, p. 235). The questions ask of the participants were both closed and open ended. Open…
Hi, Andre. Thank-you for taking the time to read my post and pose a really valuable perspective for me as I move forward in the research process. I want you to know that your question was the impetus for me to read ahead to the week 9 'feature article' and really take some time to think about what you asked and where I was previously coming from (which is why it has taken me a little bit of time to respond). In my methods paper I forwarded the following: The ethical considerations of using…
The data that I gather from the semi-structured interviews and focus group will be surrounded by grounded theory. Grounded theory is the framework most frequently used for analyzing qualitative data (Bryman, 567). Since I am limited in experience this approach will be most beneficial to me because theoretical sampling will allow me to think of my theory throughout the research process, in doing this I can pick and chose how to move my research toward properly developing a theory over time…
