Once she was up in the air she was going to teach classes from space to kids all over the world. The temperature outside on the day of the launch was thirty two degrees fahrenheit, which is the freezing point of water. This was the coldest launch yet, but they made the decision to launch anyways. The coldest launch before this was fifteen degrees fahrenheit warmer which is forty seven degrees fahrenheit. Icicles covered the launch pad and the rocket boosters. The O-rings that connect the rocket boosters to the rest of the shuttle were brittle from the freezing weather. There was also a design flaw in the rocket boosters that they ignored to launch the shuttle faster. When the engine started is when everything went downhill. Liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen mixed through the O-rings. This mix is deadly. Unnoticed smoke began to leak out of the O-rings. Hot gases escaped out of the hole that the smoke made in the O-ring. Dark, black smoke seeped out the side of the boosters where the icicles froze it that morning. The O-rings were burning up and wearing away. All of this went unnoticed and the engine kept running and they went up into the air. A fire started mid-air near the gas tanks. It spread to the gas tanks these tanks were not built to withstand fire, so it burned through. The tank exploded and blew the shuttle up with it. The explosion took place only seventy three seconds into their flight. Surprisingly the cabin survived the explosion and went barreling down into the…

One can argue that whenever an astronaut goes into space, they are subject to the unknown risks that space holds; like the Challenger accident made evident, space flight is not a routine practice. That theory could not be comparable to an astronaut embarking into space with the full knowledge of a pre-existing and very real mechanical issue that could be potentially fatal to the entire crew. In the case of the Challenger launch, there has been overwhelming evidence that the crew of astronauts…
