Problem of the Week Pool Corners

Problem Statement: For this problem of the week, we tested out rebounds and corners on a pool table. Our task for this POW, is to figure out where the ball would go if we followed the correct directions. If we hit the ball at a 45 degree angle, starting at the lower corner, and continued to hit the ball until it went into a corner pocket, where would it end up at? We had to figure out a pattern between the hits and rebounds. Doing this, we made many pool tables ranging in sizes and lengths. How to Get a Good Workout in the Pool Working out in the pool might not seem like the most effective way to slim down and shape up, but a pool-based workout burns a surprising number of calories, boosts your metabolism, works every muscle in your body, and improves your over-all fitness level. Working out in the swimming pool is so effective because water provides natural resistance – as it is almost 800 times denser than air – so each movement that you make while submerged in water works your muscles harder than doing similar cardio- or strength-based exercise on dry-land. Getting Started Most people think that working out in the pool consists of jumping in and swimming a few lengths, but getting a decent workout in the pool requires a bit more effort. Training in…

P.O.W 14 Pool Problem Kainoa Harada Problem Statement: The problem in this P.O.W is to find a formula to find how many times a ball would rebound off a table, with varying squares and rectangles to take into equation. Though there can be two separate formulas for each figure. And if you believe, there is a SUPER FORMULA that a group can find once every school year... Process: The process I, and my group, used to solve this problem was simply counting the height and width then drawing the lines the pool ball would travel. Once it hit a whole that would mark the end of the line counting, and however many lines, while using our formula, is the amount of rebounds that figure had. The book backs this up with showing the rebounds of a rectangle,…

The swimming pools, in “The Swimmer”, represent Neddie’s journey down the road to addiction and the consequences that his dependency has on his life and body. Neddie’s state of mind as he begins his addiction is described, “He had an inexplicable contempt for men who did not hurl themselves into pools. […] To be embraced and sustained by the light green water was less a pleasure, it seemed, than the resumption of a natural condition,” (Cheever, 777). Neddie describes the feeling that drinking alcohol gives him as though he is returning to some raw state of being.
