and no colleague in total agreeance. The very definition of what a civil war is exists as a point of contention for many political scientists. Devising a difference of the dichotomy of insurrection versus civil war in and of itself is a heavy task. “Ethnicity, Insurgency, and Civil War” by James Fearon and David Laitin addresses this problem by giving a three-part distinction of what a civil war is. According to them, civil wars: 1) Involve fighting between against of a state or organization and nonstate groups who sought to take control of a government, to take power in a region, or to use violence to change government policies. 2) Involve the death of over 1,000 combatants over its course, with a yearly average of 100 deaths per year, and 3) at least 100 combatants (10%) were killed on each side (Fearon and Laitin 76). By giving this definition of civil wars, Fearon and Laitin open up the possibility of dispute between political scientists over the merits of such a definition and what to do in cases of, for example, countries successfully seceding from their original power structures and forming their own government, in the case of countries overthrowing their colonial overlords. (Fearon and Laitin 76). Many civil wars are fought over the idea of identity, where we find the first fundamental disagreement between political scientists with the ideas of contructivism and primordialism. According to Jesse and Williams, constructivism “clams that identities are ‘molded,…

Rationalist Explanations for War, written by James Fearon in 1995, provides an argumentation that launching a war is costly, thus there is an ex ante bargaining range that prompt to reach an agreement. This agreement will not only reflect the possible aftermath of a war, but also avoid the cost of it. That the two belligerent will make an agreement before the war which reflect the possible results of war is always better than a war plan. As Fearon argues that war is always ex post inefficient.…

War,” James Fearon argues that due to war’s costly nature and states’ risk-averse, or at least risk-neutral, tendencies, there should always exist some possible prewar agreement between two disputing states that both parties would prefer to achieve over committing to war. While seeking to reveal his main claim that war is caused by information problems, commitment problems, and issue indivisibilities, Fearon critiques five traditional Neorealist explanations of war: anarchy, positive expected…

I say high to everyone and then walk back through the Sasquatch sized door and walk down the hall to the living room. As I enter the room I 'm greeted by a sweet citrusy pine smell that makes the setting complete. I sit down facing the tree looking beyond into the black abyss and twinkling lights. I pull out my grandpas fly fishing book like I do every year. I read the cover, “ The Complete Angler” by James Prosek. Every year I can never seem to finish the book but I get closer every year. This…

That night, I went to bed and my mind was racing. Our plan was set in place. As the clock struck midnight, I quickly snuck out of bed and got dressed. I was so anxious. I wanted to be ready at a moment’s notice. It took less than two minutes to put on a thermal shirt, a sweater, jeans, and heavy wool socks. I laid on my bed, staring at the ceiling, counting down the minutes. At 12:50 on the dot, I heard muffled noises outside my window. I sat up and looked outside. There was James and his…

Mrs. French, I hope you are feeling well today. I am sending this report by email as my handwriting is very hard to read. The first block class was very loud. I asked the students to talk quietly with their partners as they worked. Several students would converse loudly to others across the room regarding matters unrelated to the assignment.I began putting a check by the students name when I had to remind them to refrain from talking loud and from talking about issues unrelated to their math…
