On Thanksgiving, 1887, some alumni were at the Illinois Farragut Boat Club in Chicago waiting for the outcome of the football game of Yale vs. Harvard. Yale won, and when this was announced one of the Yale fans tossed a boxing glove at one of the Harvard supporters. They swung a stick, and the rest of the people in the group became intrigued.
