As a cardiologist, Dr. Atkins created the Atkins diet in the 1960’s to promote weight loss. The weight loss would be evident, due to a decrease in carbohydrates and a significant increase in protein and fats. This diet is also known as a Ketogenic diet. Although the Atkins diet promoted weight loss, it does not support the glycolysis biochemical pathway, but promotes beta-oxidation of fats, the use of ketosis, and Gluconeogenesis.
