The Atkins Diet is a popular low-carbohydrate eating plan created in 1972 by cardiologist Robert C. Atkins. The Atkins Diet restricts carbs (carbohydrates) while emphasizing protein and fats. The Atkins Diet consist of four-phase low-carbohydrate eating program, combined with vitamin and mineral supplements, as well as regular exercise. The four-phase in Atkins Diet are phase 1 (Induction), phase 2 (Balancing), phase 3 (Fine-Tuning) and phase 4 (Lifetime Maintenance). In phase 1 which is Induction, you are required to eat only 20 grams of carbs per day for 2 weeks, which the carbs are from food such as high-fat food, high-protein food and low-carb vegetables such as leafy greens. Low-carb diets may help you prevent or improve serious health conditions, such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease (Mayo Clinic Staff). In fact, almost every diet that exist that can help you reduce your weight can reduce or even reverse risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Also, most weight loss diets, not just Atkins Diet may improve blood cholesterol or blood sugar levels, at least temporarily. Atkins Diet was originally considered as unhealthy and demonized by the mainstream health authorities due to the high saturated fat content. However, new studies have shown that saturated fat is harmless. As by taking the low carbohydrate food in diet can boost metabolism and it still can actually lower the cholesterol level in body moreover in this Atkins Diet, consuming saturated fat is allowed. Saturated fat which consist of food such as lamb, cheese, butter and fatty beef, is actually very good and excellence as it can improve cardiovascular risk factor, strengthen the bones, improve the health of liver and it can strengthen our body immune system (Dr. Mercola, 2009). Atkins Diet can also improve HDL cholesterol (a good cholesterol), greater improvements in blood sugar and triglyceride values slightly more than moderate carb diets does. Atkins Diet has been proven to be an effective diet as it can help to lose weight, especially in the short-term time. While doing diet purpose is to lose weight, it can also help you to achieve a good health and everyone can do Atkins Diet including vegetarians and vegans. Before starting Atkins Diet or any diet, it is advised to talk to your doctor and seek for advises to see if it is right for you. If you do decide to try Atkins Diet, it I advised to opt for lean proteins, such as chicken or fish, rather than the all-you-can-eat bun-less cheeseburger buffet. Make sure you reach your allowance of daily carbohydrates by including fruits, vegetables, legumes and starchy vegetables. Also, be aware that abandoning any strict diet can lead to rapid weight gain.
