Introduction Understanding conflict management strategies can aid a person in resolving conflict effectively and efficiently. This paper discusses the conflict management strategies, avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise, and collaboration. Each strategy has positive and negative consequences that can aid parties within a conflict in deciding which strategy to use. Each strategy can be used in an appropriate and inappropriate manner. Understanding these concepts can allow conflicted parties to resolve and overcome conflicts more practically.

A middle-ground position must be agreed upon by all parties. This strategy calls for a moderate level of assertiveness and a moderate level of cooperation (Borisoff & Victor, 1998). The positive consequences of using this conflict management strategy resides in the fact that all parties walk away from the conflict with at least half of their needs and goals met. Most of the time, the parties end up happy as they feel the middle ground is better than not having any needs or goals met. The negative consequence is a restatement of the positive consequence. The characteristics of this conflict strategy include critical thinking, hard work, and an understanding of the other parties. Everyone involved in the conflict must expel a great amount of energy and empathy in order to successfully implement in the strategy (Borisoff & Victor, 1998). The positive consequence of utilizing this strategy is that all parties involved should have their concerns discussed and their needs and goals met. The negative consequences of using this strategy is that fact that it is difficult and time consuming. Collaboration can take a large amount of time and difficult conversation in order to reach the conclusion. Many parties in a conflict might feel there is a different strategy to use that will make the solution come about faster and requiring less
