Rationale for Seeking Specialization in a Clinical Counseling Program
After reading the overview of Capella University’s Master of Mental Health Counseling program and speaking with one of your advisors, I understand that this particular program will help me get right to where I would like to be in my profession, which is a Licensed Professional Counselor. There honestly isn’t any population of people that I’m not interested in working with, after taking different courses in my undergraduate program, I found myself interested in working with all populations of people.
It has always been a desire of mine to help others in any way that I possibly could. A main reason that I loved helping others came from watching my mother help others as

This program will teach me everything I need to know in order to obtain a Licensure in Professional Counseling and also more skills and knowledge to apply to practical mental health settings. I’m aware that I will be required to do an internship as a part of the program’s curriculum which will also help prepare me to enter practical mental health settings, as well as two residencies that will give me an opportunity to interact with other students and staff, gather information to assist me with my program, and also to learn and practice basic skills that pertain to mental health …show more content…
For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing. I enjoyed the experience so much that I found myself continuing to volunteer there even after my volunteer hours were done. I initially had dreams of one day opening my own non-profit organization, as well as my own mental health facility and what I learned from my experience there just reassured me that opening my own non-profit

Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

My professional goal is to obtain a Walden’s Master of Social Work degree with a specialization in crisis and trauma intervention. I would especially like to work with individuals affected by crisis, trauma, and grief, and help them overcome their personal and social problems that have, without a doubt, strong negative influences on their lives. Studying at Walden University is important to me, because this school will give me the knowledge and skills that I need to help people make the most of their own abilities, develop skills, and empower them to reach their goals. In the future, after gaining more knowledge and experience about mental health, I want to create mental health service agencies across the United States that will help the…

That helped me look at life in a simpler way, and taught me to put aside anything I was going through to make this young student’s day. I’ve also had the chance to see the unfairness of the world impacting those in my community when I volunteered at two Center for Human Development (CHD) programs. I have helped out at the Grace House, a program for mothers who are in recovery from addiction, and their children. I’ve also helped at a farm share held for homeless families in CHD shelters, which provides them with free…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…

During my undergraduate career here at St. Ambrose University, I have been blessed with the opportunity to learn from some of the best. As a first generation college student I have strived for the finest and made a plan to not only receive my undergraduate degree but also my masters in occupational therapy. While at St. Ambrose have taken maximum credit loads to keep me on track for the 2 + 3 occupational therapy program. A prominent issue that keeps me up at night is thinking about the amount of privilege certain children of the world have and the severe lack of resources and necessities for other children. This issue has become a concern for me ever since I visited Shepherd’s Field Children Village. Shepherd’s Field Children Village is an orphanage in China where they take in children born with disabilities and give them necessary surgeries and a home until they are adopted. It was started by an American couple in memory of their friend whose dream it was to start such a place. When I visited the orphanage, I was shocked at how happy the kids were despite their disabilities.…
