Attending Grad School

Decent Essays
Post-graduation, I plan to attend grad school. My first choice for grad school would be to attend The Ohio State University for clinical psychology. During the grad school program I would love to be able to assist in teaching psychology or sociology courses. I would also like to be able to help generally in any position for Ohio State's mental health department. I know that college is a stressful time and this, along with the age range of most college students, puts students at higher risk of developing mental health issues. Stress alone, without a more severe mental health disorder can also be a difficult thing to deal with without proper support. I am fully aware of the impact this can have on class performance as well as life outside

Throughout history, students have been pushed to their limits by the government’s standards of living, and today’s college reality is no exception. In Alana Semuel’s article called “Manual Labor, All Night Long: The Reality of Paying for College,” we meet Alexis Mclin, a college student struggling with the burden of pushing herself past her limitations. Mclin works at a UPS facility between midnight and four in the morning. All the while proceeding to go observe an elementary school like setting and attend a lab for her class, not only is Mclin running on a lack of sleep but she’s endangering her future by pushing herself too far.…

I have two goals in life, and the second is simply an extension of the first. The first is to be completely happy, and the second is to be a clinical psychologist. Almost every college in the nation has a psychology program, but Tufts has something more. Instead of offering only general psychology to undergraduate students, this school offers a concentration in clinical psychology. I want to make the most of every year I spend in school, which I can do best by going to Tufts and majoring in clinical psychology, which will help me reach my two…

After gathering research from other sources, besides the University of Mississippi Counseling Center, I discovered just how prevalent mental illness is on college campuses. It is estimated that one and four percent of Americans 18 years and older are living with a diagnosable mental health disorder. This is a huge problem for college aged individuals, because unlike older adults, the age group that college students fall into are shown as the lowest rated group for seeking help, with an estaminet of 40 percent of students. The most common mental illnesses among college students are depression, suicide, eating disorders, and addiction. These illnesses often correlate with lower GPA and higher rates of dropping out of college.…

Mental health has become a serious issue amongst college students in the United States. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health Illness (2015), the third leading cause of death on college campuses is suicide. 73 percent of college students who are currently living with a mental health condition have experienced a mental health crisis on campus. However, 34.2 percent reported that they were not aware that their students were dealing with these issues on their campus. In the past year, over 11 percent of college students have been diagnosed or treated for anxiety, and more than 10 percent of students reported that they were either diagnosed or treated for depression (National Alliance on Mental Health Illness, 2015).…

Ever since the brain has been developed in the first living creature mental illness has been something that has plagued all life. Compared to recent years not so long ago sufferers of mental illness were treated like complete and utter garbage. These people were sent to asylums to spend the rest of their days rotting in the dark while their families simply turned the other way. All that the families wanted was to get rid of their nuisance that was frowned upon by society simply because they were a little broken. Granted not all of the places were terrible, but that does not change the fact about what some of these people went through.…

According to many studies done on college students mental illnesses are much more common than one might believe. While it might seem strange that young adults could possibly be diagnosed with psychological disorders at such an age, many factors contribute to these odds. As college students adolescents have much on their plate, and possibly deal with more than is possible to handle. At the same time as having to go to school some students have jobs, others might be dealing with parenthood, a few that are college athletes, and other outside forces that are having to be dealt with such as dating or immediate family. Seeing as anxiety disorders in students are one of the most common mental health problems on college campuses, along with daily…

In a mental health setting, stress refers to a person feeling that they are not able to deal with the situation with which they are faced (Mindful Employer 2011). A small amount of stress, often called pressure, can be helpful to increase motivation and production, and produce a feeling of achievement when a task is completed. However, extreme stress may impair a person’s decision making and their ability to carry out normal chores, and may even cause emotional or physical symptoms such as anger, despair, stiff muscles, or frequent headaches (Department of Labour and Occupational Safety and Health 2003). Excessive stress may also contribute to or worsen mental health problems such as anxiety or depression (Department of Labour and Occupational Safety and Health 2003;…

With these alarming numbers consistently rising over time, the potential solution to the issue must be seen within college campuses and a potential fix to this solution must be implemented soon through the form of better, more sustainable, on-campus mental health services (Mowbray et al. 231). In an academic article written by Carol T. Mowbray et al, the researchers argue in support of granting students with the necessary, undeniable, resource of on-campus mental health services to help alleviate any of the pain, tension, and issues that mental health can negatively affect (Mowbray et al. 235). It is recommended that students be given a more-informed perspective on the potential negative implications mental illness can have in academic careers as well as provide more caring support and availability to help students deal with the seriousness of their real-life issues (Mowbray et al. 235). In a study conducted by Jihan Saber Raga Mahmoud et al, they further the claim for more student engagement with faculty by stating that nurses working within college campuses must effectively teach students how to develop coping strategies and behaviors to help deal with their mental illness (154). I…
