Shepherd's Field Observation Report

A prominent issue that keeps me up at night is thinking about the amount of privilege certain children of the world have and the severe lack of resources and necessities for other children. This issue has become a concern for me ever since I visited Shepherd’s Field Children Village. Shepherd’s Field Children Village is an orphanage in China where they take in children born with disabilities and give them necessary surgeries and a home until they are adopted. It was started by an American couple in memory of their friend whose dream it was to start such a place. When I visited the orphanage, I was shocked at how happy the kids were despite their disabilities. I was given the opportunity to walk around their homes and their school and it is …show more content…
I thought that I could start a non-profit organization and I spent days learning how to start one and if it was possible. I finally realized after trying for a while that it was unlikely and unrealistic that I could succeed, so I decided to try something else. I found volunteer opportunities around my community such as volunteering at a food bank and hospital. I volunteered at Northwest Harvest and Virginia Mason Hospital and I still volunteer there now. I met many people at these places and they all told me that I was impacting peoples’ lives immensely and that they were grateful that they had people like me to help. At Virginia Mason, I was able to talk with many of the elderly patients and they seemed genuinely grateful and happy that “some young people these days get off their phones and give back to the community.” I then realized that instead of singlehandedly trying to make an impact on the world, I could get my friends and others to help as well; so I decided to research different clubs to see if I could start one at my school. I finally found one called Interact Club, which I started and now is

Arnisha Jones University of Michigan-Flint While reading the book “Fire in the Ashes: The twenty-five years among the poorest children in America”, I gained understanding of why the book was chosen to be read within my sociology class. The author, Johnathan Kozol, gave a very good detail and needed story about the issue of poverty and children and families living in it. In today’s generation everyone has a chance to be blessed in a variety of ways, but yet poverty is still a huge issue. I think that many have gained this attitude of “do better for yourself and leave to a better environment”, and forgot about those that are left behind; Instead of staying and helping change for the better.…

There honestly isn’t any population of people that I’m not interested in working with, after taking different courses in my undergraduate program, I found myself interested in working with all populations of people. My interest in child poverty persistence dates back to my childhood. Growing up in Liberia and acclimating to America as a first generation refugee, I can assuredly communicate the difficulty experiences of children from impoverished families. In Liberia, I lived in a two-bedroom tent with 10 relatives, we owned nothing and when a civil war arrived, we lost families and the tent. While coming to America, two out of the 14 relatives that applied were selected from the immigration process. My father, grandfather and I came with the clothes on our backs.…

14.7 million children live in poverty. I am one of them. And yet, no one seems to notice me or care. I’m just another piece of garbage in the street, just another thin, starved child that is above the notice of anyone. Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

In November 2017, I spent a weekend at a charity organization called Heifer Farm that works to end hunger and poverty. This experience lets people understand how fortunate industrialized nations are. Most of us do not even think twice about where we will get our food or if we have available clean water or electricity. During the trip I had to live in a section of the farm dedicated to houses that display poverty conditions based on a country; the Global Village. The houses did not have heat or electricity and later in the day it began to rain.…

I agree with Michael that the “Poor Kids” documentary was tough to watch. Seeing the different types of impoverished living situations that people in the documentary were in was both humbling and frustrating. It was humbling in the sense that it gave me a far greater appreciation for the basic amenities and gifts that I was afforded during my childhood. I never even came remotely close to having my family struggle to survive, and for that I’m forever grateful. The documentary is especially frustrating because its subjects are right here in the United States.…
