SAU Mission Statement

During my undergraduate career here at St. Ambrose University, I have been blessed with the opportunity to learn from some of the best. As a first generation college student I have strived for the finest and made a plan to not only receive my undergraduate degree but also my masters in occupational therapy. While at St. Ambrose have taken maximum credit loads to keep me on track for the 2 + 3 occupational therapy program. Although my hard work has landed me a spot amongst some of the finest peers, and faculty in the OT program I feel as if there has been something lacking from my education here at St. Ambrose. The universities mission statement states, “St. Ambrose enables its students to develop intellectually, spiritually, ethically, socially, artistically, and physically to enrich their own lives and the lives of others.” Having the opportunity to go on the study abroad trip to Brazil would allow me to fulfil the final components of the SAU mission statement.

I had gotten my feet wet by taking several health classes, and volunteering with the school athletic trainer during my high school years. I also plunged into it by working as a certified nurse’s assistant at a nursing home, and as a home health care aid, and direct support staff doing respite work. I absolutely loved this work, being able to commutate one on one and help people is what I love to do. It also gave me a general idea of which area of occupational therapy I would enjoy working in. After my field work and working at a nursing home and with mentally disabled adults, my goals after OT graduate school is to work in productive aging, mental health, or a rehabilitation unit. This program would allow me to build skills that would not only enrich my services as a therapist, but also allow me to share my unique perspective that I would gain from this study abroad
