We need to be aware of our own cultural beliefs and recognize people from other cultures may not share them. Some individuals may be threatened by cultural differences.
Culturally counselors are aware of culturally learned assumptions by themselves and patients. They comprehend the information about the patients ' culture and are able to intervene and bring positive change and practice self reflection that will help acquire the skills necessary to engage with both the individual and small group. It is necessary to be sensitive to words which are unique to a particular culture as well as body language and other nonverbal behaviors which is of significance.
Interpersonal communication influences the way in which we communicate with others and are influenced by our cultural identities and is an important part of our standpoint. Two ways to further the development of interpersonal skills as a counselor is being able to listen to the client issues from their point of view and show the patient that they are valued regardless of what they say or do. When we focus on our values, we are more likely to accomplish our goals. Self awareness is necessary before one begins the process of understanding others. Having an aunt with mental illness, being aware of schizophrenia as an illness, learning more about myself and recognizing my feelings for my aunt. By changing the way my mind interprets what I think I can change as well as my emotions which in turn help to enhance the quality of my relationship with my aunt. It also helps me understand her as well as others with mental illnesses and be able to empathize with them, which impacted my decision to apply for the Mental Health
