Introduction
Many mental health problems have become burdens in the lives of many post-secondary students. For the Winter Facilitation, I chose to present the topic of Mental Health amongst Post-Secondary Students. The reason why I chose this topic is because I wanted to educate the group on this as mental health is a growing concern amongst post-secondary students across the country. Additionally, it can be applicable to us as students as we experience increased levels of stress from academic pressure. These were very appealing as facilitation topics as they are applicable to myself and the rest of the group. They would also make great discussion topics. However, I let the group vote which topic was of more interest to them. The votes resulted in Mental Health amongst Post Secondary Students as the winning topic. Some students expressed an interest in the topic of suicide amongst post-secondary students and the best practice guidelines. I thought this would be a great issue to address in regards to post-secondary mental illness as this is what usually circulates the media and news. In school, we do not really discuss how to intervene or handle a situation with a suicidal client. I felt that by integrating the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) best practice guidelines in the content, we would have a better understanding and insight as to how to handle suicidal clients. When we finished creating the presentation and activities, I encountered a great concern; time management. I was worried about squeezing the content and activities into forty minutes. Every time I rehearsed, it would always be a little over fifty minutes. As the numbers of post-secondary students affected with a mental illness increases, the need for nurses to address this issue is anticipated to grow. Through community nursing, nurses are able to provide support and nursing care to those experiencing mental illness. Nurses working in this area can also work towards combatting stigma and help patients and their families cope - which is especially helpful for the post-secondary population. I also believe that as nursing students, we can also contribute to overcoming the associated stigma and increasing awareness and knowledge about mental illness by educating
