Importance Of Being In The National Honors Society

Great Essays
Being in the National Honors Society is one of the highest honors that can be earned by a high school student. It opens up opportunities for scholarships, looks great on college applications, and shows that I’m on the right path for my future. I’ve dreamt about being in NHS for years, knowing its strong reputation and prestige. Now that the moment I’ve been dreaming about is here, for once, I’m actually happy to say there was something my moms were right about.
My moms raised me with a strong set of morals, including, “hard work pays off.” Sometimes this can be discouraging, when you work hard but it doesn’t pay off as you’d like it to. I’ve always gotten the grades I strive for without much struggle. However, once high school started,

Since then, I have put in over 100 hours of community service. It’s here that I developed my passion for giving back. I’ve learned many different skills and discovered interests I didn’t know I had. I’ve learned organizational skills, developed immense patience, and realized my love for working with kids. Moreover, I’ve learned how to create substantial conversation with kids, including how to approach tougher topics with them. This has made me a smarter and stronger person, with an improved set of skills to help me in the world after high school. On top of volunteering at the library, I’ve also serviced other parts of my community. I’ve consistently peer tutored for NJHS since seventh grade, despite the lack of enforcement behind the requirement. Moreover, I’ve had the privilege to be a Lower School Mentor, which gave me the opportunity to learn the trials and tribulations of a first grade student. That helped me look at life in a simpler way, and taught me to put aside anything I was going through to make this young student’s day. I’ve also had the chance to see the unfairness of the world impacting those in my community when I volunteered at two Center for Human Development (CHD) programs. I have helped out at the Grace House, a program for mothers who are in recovery from addiction, and their children. I’ve also helped at a farm share held for homeless families in CHD shelters, which provides them with free …show more content…
During my freshman year, I was chosen to be both a math and a Spanish prefect. Beyond that, as members of NJHS, myself and three others stepped up when the elected council didn’t do the jobs they were elected to, despite losing the election ourselves. It was expressed to us by our NJHS adviser that it would have been better if we were elected, considering we did the jobs despite not being chosen for them. We have also agreed to help with NJHS next year, with the goal of implementing a better system for peer tutoring that holds people accountable for their actions. These positions prepared me for my ultimate goal, which was to be the Bullying Prevention Senior Prefect in Student Life. I was given a powerful letter of recommendation by the librarian who I’ve volunteered for, so with that, along with my dedication to Student Life, I reached my goal. Alongside a senior, I will be the co-Bullying Prevention Senior Prefect for the 2016-2017 school year. I hope to use my experience with bullying and my passion for helping others to improve the experience of students at my

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

“Membership in National Junior Honor Society has become recognized as one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a junior high school student. Membership is, however, more than an honor; it carries with it a responsibility and should be considered the beginning of an obligation, not merely the successful culmination of an effort to achieve recognition and honor.” Not only because it’s an honor or a recognition, but I would like to be a part of NJHS because I’m very responsible and I love helping people and community service. Responsibility is one of the major requirements for being in NJHS.…

What have you done to make your school or your community a better place? 370 “With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don 't seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.” This quote from the recent film Hacksaw Ridge embodies my sentiment that brightening up someone’s day is the best feeling in the world for me. This desire to help others prompted me to volunteer for two years at UCLA hospital to help transport patients. Hospital patients often deal with severe pain and sometimes loneliness, and I knew that giving some of my time could improve their moods and outlooks.…
