Personal Narrative: Changing My Family

Its spring of 2003, my grandmother had been babysitting me while my parents left to go to work for the day. Towards 5 o’clock, my mother walked into the door. I was greeted with an enormous hug filled with love and affection. Shortly after she arrived, my father stopped by the house. I began crying; hoping that the sound of my tears would calm them down and they would realize that there was no need for an argument. They were the people who made me, and I wanted us to …show more content…

As I was shopping one day I came across a very big man the store that day. Intrigued by the physical appearance and the information the store clerk gave me; from that day forward the Buddha gave me an opportunity to look deeper into his background. Reading about Buddha and his beliefs on life made me the person I am today. The Four Noble Truths made me realize why my life was so hard for me to function and to live with. Buddha talked about how hatred was caused by fundamental ignorance. The reason why we suffer is because the ignorance that we hold made us see ourselves as being unconnected with others. There are approximately 397,000 children in foster care in the United States of America currently and I used to be one of them. However, foster had not even been near the forefront of my mind that summer. The summer before I started my first year of high school, I had plenty of anxiety about the tall tale I invented in my own mind that stood before me. Stories about how hard high school were numerous and often regaled on the crowded bus ride home by high schoolers who seemed to have the knowledge of every wise teacher in history combined. which that scared me to death; I had always held my position as a good student who followed the rules of my middle school.…

Change, they say, is the only constant thing that exists. The irony is that I totally believe it to be true but I never thought that I would be one of the people who are bad at dealing with change. I grew up in a small city in the Philippines. My simple life with my mom and my sisters, however hard it can get at times, did not hinder us to survive our day-to-day lives. It was 2014 when my family decided to permanently reside here in the United States to fulfill my grandma’s request to have all her children, including my mom, to stay with her.…

Change The cold metal on my bare feet shot a surge of chill through my body. I once again stepped onto that scale, and once again hoped for different results. Glancing down in anticipation as the digital numbers rose, I begged them to stop, and they did; 194, 196, 197, and finally settled upon 198. I did it, I finally dipped below two-hundred pounds for the first time in what felt like forever.…

My family background as a surrogate father to six younger siblings has prepared me to listen compassionately and give advice as needed. Also, in my capacity as a nursing home minister I have had the opportunity to reach out to lonely and confused patients. The role of pastoral counselor is, of course, much broader and much more inclusive as far as the needs of prospective clients are concerned. What I have read and learned it has been clear that it is not enough to be counselor. A family system has a critical and unique role to pay within the system.…

The family that I was born into has had a dramatic impact on the person that I am today. Obviously the people themselves have had a dramatic impact on who I am as a person, but the structure of my family has also shaped who I’ve become more than anyone I know personally. When I was three years old my parents got divorced. I don 't remember them being married because I was too young when they separated, but in the long run, not remembering them together has helped me through the experience. For me, a nuclear family wasn 't natural because divorce was the only thing that I knew.…

When it comes to the dynamics in my family, mine is certainly unique. While divorce was common in countless families while I was growing up; it was not something that my family had ever dealt with. My parents have been legally married for fifty-three years. By most standards these days, a marriage of fifty-three years would be a success; however, my parents separated only five years ago.
