The new friendships I had made taught me how to make friends within diverse groups, something I had never fathomed would happen. New cultural aspects became introduced to me in the small, impoverished neighbourhood as I learned more about Hispanic, African American, and other new culture’s I had not encountered or avidly interacted with before. This interaction with a new population showed me how similar most people are in spite of cultural and physical attributes. An awareness of the world around me formed and I learned I had not realized how much privilege I acquired it while living in the suburbs of Holly Springs and the fortune bestowed upon me to have been born into a white, suburban, Christian family. This extreme life experience taught me how to cope with extreme situations and to stay in control of my own life. Here I learned that we all have to learn from our failures to gain any insight within our life. Living in an impoverished area in the middle of a food desert has assumed its place as one of the most awakening lessons I have learned from the whole experience.
