I grew up in a small city in the Philippines. My simple life with my mom and my sisters, however hard it can get at times, did not hinder us to survive our day-to-day lives. It was 2014 when my family decided to permanently reside here in the United States to fulfill my grandma’s request to have all her children, including my mom, to stay with her. As a consequence, my sisters and I would have to move with her too. That’s when it hit me. I’m too obsessed with consistency— with unchanging way of life.

A few transformations and developments about me over summer or maybe even the last time I thought about how much I have changed. One social transformation I went through would be a change of views on how I see the world, second would be my interest and hobbies, doing and liking things that I wouldn’t particularly thought I would even like or do. Lastly one thing that hasn’t really changed would be the love I have for my dearest mother.…

Everyone knows the YMCA song, but everyone doesn’t have the same connection to it that I do. This building never contained one life changing event for me, but it has been a pivotal place in my life. A place I’ve referred to as home many times, the YMCA has shaped who I am as a man. This pivotal spot is where I suffered my first traumatic injury, changing how I do things for the rest of my life; but also was the place I went to when coping with family incidents. This institution, in particular the basketball gym, helped me find myself, changing my life forever.…

It was some November day, and the whole gymnasium was silent. I look around and can count 19 girls surrounding me. The only thing you could hear was the heavy breathing of 20 girls after the last basketball tryout. It was almost as if the air was a prized possession and everyone was trying to steal it from each other. The air was filled with sweat and anticipation.…

Two years ago I was a completely different person. That may sound like a complete exaggeration, but looking back on the person who carried my name two years ago, it is shockingly true. Two years ago, I was the quiet, overweight, anxious girl who avoided social interaction as if it was the plague. Needless to say, I was not the most confident or outgoing person out there. I let my anxiety disorder rule my life, and let my weight be an excuse as to why I couldn’t do certain things.…

In my city the people who live here incline to stay here and settle for what is here, which isn't much to tell the truth. My mother was endeavoring to transmute that for us, yet again life caught us by surprise. I will always remember when my life started to turn around. I continued to make simple changes to my everyday life to help myself get better and better so that I could reach my goals. Without perseverance and the motivation I received from the people that were close to me, I would have never been able to make it to where I am today. When my mother decided that we were moving to Maryland, United States I was petrified, even though I knew the benefits of the move,. Not only was I presented with completely different surroundings, but also a culture shock that was like none other. Everything was different, even the way people pronounced a simple word like, ‘party’. I had grown up with a mindset to reject change but as time passed I realised that change was not as terrible as it had been claimed to be. That it was necessary to take a step forward in life and grow with every opportunity presented to us.…

In my opinion, lessons are important because they have transformed me into the person that I am today.
