Old Spice Commercial Analysis

The Old Spice man is the man your man could smell like. We all looked away from him and when we looked back we were all of a sudden on a big sail boat. A strong muscular arm reached out and offered us “tickets to that thing we love" before the tickets all of a sudden turned into diamonds. Then the Old Spice man was on a horse. The Old spice commercials have been a huge advertisement/internet sensation since they aired it in the 2010 super bowl match. Since then the company has greatly grown with its comedic commercials featuring actor Isaiah Mustafa (old spice man) that can walk on water, bake a gourmet cake in the kitchen he built with his own hands and then swan dive into a Jacuzzi on a motorcycle.

During the ad Mustafa starts off by talking to the female viewers. This one ad begins in a washroom where Mustafa comes out of a shower dressed in a towel talking to the women and telling them to compare their man to himself. The commercial reaches out to women by giving them an ideal image of what an “Ideal man” should look like and be like and how he should smell for example the ad makes women want a manlier man like Mustafa who will take them on a boat and buy them tickets to that thing they love, give her diamonds or ride up on a horse. All of these things are related to gender stereotypes. Because of this many woman will probably want to purchase some kind of Old Spice product for their lover in hopes that it make then more similar to an ideal man like Mustafa. The Old Spice ad targets men by showing an ideal image of what an “Ideal man “should look like through using a very fit attractive man in the commercial. In world full of gender stereotypes and masculinity comparisons men want to look smell and be exactly like Mustafa a man who has the masculine things (manly scent, muscular body). The commercial goes after men by saying that in a way they are not currently the man their lady want them to be but when they use Old Spice they will be a lot more desirable to women.
