In order to understand various different leadership styles and evaluate their possible impacts on organisations; this essay will outline 3 leadership styles in particular. By defining leadership itself and discussing Autocratic, Democratic and Laissez Faire leadership, the topic of leadership will be analysed to see when, where and why leadership is important in the context of business organisations. This would limit the types of new ideas coming to light and inevitably affect the organisations quality of work and productivity. The workforce are likely to be skilled but demotivated by the fact that they cannot contribute or gain much responsibility. In an industry that relies on creativity, this style is likely to cripple an organisation.
A Laissez Faire style of leadership could help maintain levels of creativity but the lack of guidance and coordination between different departments may reduce productivity levels. Although creativity could be considered the most important thing to an Advertising Agency, the importance of meeting deadlines is paramount to their ability to stay competitive. The 2 way communication system would greatly slow down the organisations ability to trade and make profits. It is likely that each individual is a specialist in their particular discipline or even market but completely unfit to contribute towards the functions of the entire business. For example an Quantative Analyst is likely to have a Degree in Mathematics but is unlikely to have any valuable contributions on how the organisation can attract more investment. The time consuming and consultative nature of this style is not suitable for an industry that requires quick decision making ability and independent thinking.
Through the understanding of leadership and the further evaluation and discussion of various leadership styles; this essay shows that particular styles of leadership affect different organisations in different ways. It is impossible to argue that a single style is best for business, instead this essay argues that the most effective style of leadership will depend on the organisation itself. Even within a single organisation, the most effective style of leadership could vary from department to department.
Whether it is Autocratic, Democratic or Laissez Faire, the most suitable and efficient leadership style will be one which upholds the values of the business whilst catering to the functions of the organisation, the type of employees they recruit and the type of decisions that
