Reflective Essay: My Literacy Experience

My Literacy Adventure When I came into this class I had no idea what to expect. Was it going to be an easy class I would not have to worry about? Or would it test my writing abilities to a whole other level? I soon found out that I not prepared for what was to come. For the first time I felt as though I was on my own when it came to writing. In high school I did not take any advanced English or writing classes and I had the same English teacher for three years. My teacher was very straight forward with what he wanted so it was very easy for me to excel in the class. Starting this year, I had quickly realized that I was unprepared for this class. Coming into Dr. Krummel’s class allowed me to understand that there was no one’s hand to hold anymore. The day I received my first assignment was very worrisome. Dr. Krummel had not …show more content…
I came into this class with many weaknesses. Throughout the semester some of those weaknesses became my ultimate strength by the end of the year. For example, I feel like I have become a lot more direct with my words without straying off to who knows what. But many of my weaknesses still remain. I still struggle with repetitiveness, and incorrect word usage but I will continue to get better at managing those problems for many years to come. This class was a massive wake-up call to me. I was fortunate enough to have a professor like Dr. Krummel to know and understand my struggles and help me grow as a writer along the way. Before when I met with a written assignment I was too focused on getting it done as soon as I could. Now I look at every piece I write like my very own child. I have to give it a lot of attention so it can turn into the successful piece I wanted. This is not the end of my learning on how to write. I have only scratched the surface of my new beginning. This class created at new sense of desire in me to grow as a writer each and every day ahead of

Learning to read is a skill many can obtain quickly or not so well. Myself, on the other hand was one of the many children who struggled with not only the thought of reading, but the actual process of reading not only a book, but sentences, word and sounding out words. Struggling through elementary with reading problems and on and off again help made it seem even worse. Going into kindergarten was intimidating, with all the bright colored posters with words even I couldn’t read. Having to be assigned seats next to strangers who soon would become my closest friends.…

In the memoir, the “Reading Like A Writer,” activity helped tremendously. The imaging exercises we performed in the class went a long way to brainstorming an idea about what to write about. Choosing a part was hard, but when I started, the story came out smoothly. I can now imagine myself in the audience’s shoes while reading a paper. The compare/contrast essay was a little difficult because I didn’t know what to write about.…

Being able to read and write is an essential skill, everyone needs this skill. Reading and writing is used everyday without even thinking about it. I came to the United States when I still believed in fairy tales and Santa Claus; everything to me about the United States was different and new; I went to school not knowing English, I didn’t have any friends and most of all, I struggled trying to comprehend my teachers. I was eager to learn English and to be able to write. Before I came to this foreign country my dad would travel to Nicaragua which, is where I’m from he’d bring toys that would prepare us to learn this new language that would later on give us so many opportunities.…

To be completely frank with you, this class was a challenge to me. Although this class did have some similarities to my twelfth grade english class, the differences were unfamiliar to my sense, but I am glad I faced it in this semester. A big challenge that I had to face this semester was asking for the proper help I need to improve my writing, and participating in class. I do admit, I never truly faced the challenge of participating in class as much I expected to. Although, I did ask for help, whether asking my peers or asking you, Professor Kaiser.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

My experience in this class has been great and it has helped me see how far my writing skills can go. I don’t expect myself to do superb in the field on writing since that’s not my interest. In the past, I’ve only expected myself to do average and accomplish only what is needed to pass. However, this class pushed me even further with my writing which I’m thankful for because it broadened my view on how to write an essay that’s not just average. I still have a lot to learn since my essays are still flawed in several areas.…

Before this class I thought that I was a pretty decent writer. After my first essay I realized how wrong I was, but this class has taught me all sorts of useful information and ways to keep improving myself as a writer. It has taught me how to write about things that are extremely personal to me, for example, I would have never imagined going back in time and writing about all of my friends coming to me about their deepest secrets, that would never have occurred to me to be interesting to read. I’ve always read books and stories that were tragic events and were very interesting to read, but I never knew that mine could be as well, like in my research paper I talked about my friend who wanted to commit suicide I stated, “he told me how he hated himself, how he hated his life, how he just wanted it to be over.” I never realized that…

A writing experience that has stood out the most for me was when I was a sophomore in High School. There was a girl in my class who I wasn't so fond of who one day decided to announce to everyone that she had begun to write her own stories. She showed everyone pieces of her writings expecting to get nothing but compliments and be to deemed the class writer, but when she finally showed me her work I cringed at how deplorable it was. The stories had no clear perspective of whether it was written in first person or third person view, some of the simplest of words were spelled wrong, and many words were used in the wrong context. The class didn't seem to care for her stories so they just gave standard responses with no words for…
