Ap English Class Reflection

Improved Essays
For my first semester of college, I took this class having previous experience in AP English courses. So I thought the class would be easy and I believed I wouldn’t learn anything new. After a couple classes however, I realized that I still had to improve my skills as a writer. Throughout the course of the semester, I was able to better understand the importance of peer edits, utilizing my resources, and writing elements which helped my growth as a student and a writer.

During my time at high school, peer edits were not utilized as often. However in this class, it was important to get a second and third opinion. In the end it did not only help my own paper, but I was able to help others with their paper as well. Peer review allowed me to improve my papers and learn about errors such as comma splices. Especially in my literacy

Prior I had little experience with formulating research type papers. I was able to learn about credible sources and I was able to learn how to use the library’s online database which was supportive for my papers. Even the books proved to be valuable resources, especially the Norton Field Guide. This particular book taught me how to properly analyze a text and it provided a series of steps that makes understanding a passage much simpler. In fact, I even wrote out the steps in a summarizing format for future reference, and I’m certain I will make use of them.

Before this class, there are some writing elements that I had not considered using before. One of them being the audience. I never reflected upon the audience’s perspective. This helped me realize that for some instances, I do not give enough detail or I am too broad. Making a clear argument is important to an individual’s paper, and I learned that this can be done with checking to make sure the evidence as well as my explanation makes sense. Having peer reviews also helped with clarifying details to the

PADM 302 Course Reflection My primary goals for this course were to improve my writing skills in two specific ways. I wanted to be able to write with greater speed, but with apparent quality, and I wanted to be clearer in my writing. I had two strategies in mind to meet these goals. The first included becoming proficient at writing outlines and frameworks, which, I thought, would help me better adhere to my objectives for the papers I write. The second strategy was to learn methods by which I could become more concise in writing which would enable me to more powerfully present the points I wish to deliver in papers.…

Writing Peer Reviews Involves Responding directly to the writer’s note implies being the kind of reader the writer needs. Thus enabling the reader and the writer to view the piece they are handling in different sincere perspectives. Glossing for Revision, this technique involves the reader reading very carefully through the piece and glossing each and every paragraph. Taking note of the author’s notes equips the readers with the contexts they need to be conversant with the response that is needed (Moore & Cassel,…

Throughout this semester, we have written two major papers that really display my capabilities as a writer. By evaluating these two pieces with the learning outcomes established at the beginning of this semester, outcomes 1, 2, and 3 are most applicable when gauging my progress in this course. Learning outcome 1 is, "Demonstrate academic research and writing skills in essays and projects to participate in a scholarly conversation" Learning outcome 2 is, "Demonstrate critical reading through a knowledge of the forms and functions of a variety of texts" Learning Outcome 3 is, "Follow a research writing process that includes developing a topic, locating and evaluating sources (including peer-reviewed), composing in response to those sources, and revising and reflecting on that process;" Each of these outcomes I believe I have met by using them as goals when writing in and out of class. In my essay "Survivors and their Children: Examining the Holocaust's Multigenerational Effects" I discuss the impact the Holocaust has on those who survived it and on their children.…

The class conferences and especially peer-review sessions greatly assist in identifying composition and rhetorical methods I have accomplished and others I strive to conquer at the professional level. In my written work, I have master genre, conventions, grammar, and the utilization and citing of supporting evidence at either the strong or professional level (refer to Copenhaver-project1-TIB-Rubric.pdf included in portfolio). I meticulously conduct an extensive research on my topics to provide professional and convincing evidence in support of my argument. In the past, I have not been overly persuasive in my rhetorical approach in clearly stating my…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

On the 1st day of AP English class all you heard was the clock barely ticking, sweat coming off of the teacher forehead and the students taking out paper and writing utensils to take notes on what we need. What stood out was Mrs. Fantroy’s strong voice along with the books that were shown for everyone to read that semester. The books looked like they could have come from out of ancient tombs or something. She had at least two lengthy looking books. She stated, “These are just some books for you guys to read just this semester.…

The first couple of sessions were like the ground periods, I had to get familiar with Hidden Oaks Elementary School and their ESOL program as well as to meet the team of teachers and their students. From the very beginning I felt very comfortable with both teachers and the students’.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

In this class, I have learned to use MLA formatting, writing strategies and processes for different audiences and purposes, a variety of rhetorical strategies and processes for analyzing, and how to revise my work with attention to purpose, development, style, grammar, punctuation. This allowed me to realize that my information to the audience needed to be presented in a different way. One frustrating thing about the peer edit process, was not everyone in my group would turn things in on time, or complete edits and rough drafts. Occasionally, I would only have one person edit my work, so I did not receive as much feedback. After reviewing all of my feedback, I have learned that I still need to be extra cognizant of mla formatting concerning in text citations and the works cited page. Additionally, I still make various grammatical errors and sometimes my sentences need to be restructured in a way that makes the point more clear to the audience.…

Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…

I never really had a good experience with peer-review back in high-school. It was mostly used as a time to mess around with classmates and do other stuff besides working on our papers. Needless to say, I wasn’t really looking forward to it. Once we actually got around to peer-reviewing I found it surprisingly helpful. I was able to get a lot of useful information from my partners on how I should improve my paper before turning it.…
