In the memoir, the “Reading Like A Writer,” activity helped tremendously. The imaging exercises we performed in the class went a long way to brainstorming an idea about what to write about. Choosing a part was hard, but when I started, the story came out smoothly. I can now imagine myself in the audience’s shoes while reading a paper. The compare/contrast essay was a little difficult because I didn’t know what to write about. The group activity that we participated in class helped me to develop an idea about what to write about. I felt relaxed, uninhibited and focused, it is during this time when my creative juices start flowing. During the group reviews I notice that I am able to identify positions and thoughts in other people’s writings. I like to suggest ideas that would help flesh out opinions, thoughts, and ideas. I felt that I had helped out my peers during the reviews. I believe it is a mutually beneficial experience for everyone involved. The reading and proofreading of other’s writing helped me to improve corrections in my own work. I also like learning different styles of writing and how to relate to the target audiences for each essay. The mechanical errors in my writing are where I have the most trouble

With that in mind, it prompted me to mention my English learning experience in preschool and how my teacher has encouraged me.…

Myself, on the other hand was one of the many children who struggled with not only the thought of reading, but the actual process of reading not only a book, but sentences, word and sounding out words. Struggling through elementary with reading problems and on and off again help made it seem even worse. Going into kindergarten was intimidating, with all the bright colored posters with words even I couldn’t read. Having to be assigned seats next to strangers who soon would become my closest friends.…

Learning to read was a struggle for both Fredrick Douglass and I due to inconsistent teachers, challenges which sparked motivation, and effects on our future because we had to teach ourselves the fundamental of reading. It is difficult to learn to read and when you have inconsistent teachers. This adds an additional obstacle. Although I was not a slave, the school system had failed me.…

I then analyzed the structure of the passage by identifying all main ideas. When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…

However, throughout the unit and with the guidance of numerous effective exercises I narrowed down my topics and instantly started to write. However, as I wrote my creative nonfiction, my writing appeared quite dull with few images and details describing the setting. Consequently, as I revised my creative nonfiction, I started to add numerous details and images, however, my paragraphs began to become extremely lengthy. Furthermore, my paper lacked the suspense and build it required.…
