Cellphone Usage In Schools Do you feel that students spend too much time on cellphones during the instructional day in high schools? Whether cellphones should be banned in schools will forever be a continuous dispute. Modern technology has created many wonderful advances in our society; however it has also taken away from some valuable aspects of our world. Cellphones are not appropriate in an educational setting because they are taking away from the social and physical experience of learning, they increase bullying among peers and they decrease academic mental engagement. Cellphones being allowed in schools will increase this percentage to at least 32%. Bullying in schools is a big issue that has been stressed for a while now. Bullying in schools has caused suspensions, self harm, and even death. When a child is being picked on in school, it is distracting them from their work. They become so worried about being picked on that they can not focus on their school work and sometimes it is so bad that they even avoid coming to school. This causes students to become unsuccessful in their studies. Cellphones in school just gives students another reason to bully one another. For example, children will now be bullied for the type of phone they might have while some may not even own a phone at all and could be made fun of for not being as wealthy as others. If students do not have a cellphone and the work they are doing in class requires one then they may become unsuccessful and embarrassed. Cellphones give the students mobile internet connection and this increases cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communications to bully a person typically sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. Allowing cellphones in schools makes it easier for bullies to do this. People can now take pictures and videos of others during school and use these to bully with over the internet. Furthermore, phones in schools will increase theft. Students having their phones out all the time make it easier for thieves to steal them. They can also misplace their phones or forget them in a class which is the perfect time for a kleptomaniac to make his move. With student’s phones being stolen, there will be a lot of angry parents blaming the school and it will turn out to be a big problem for the
