Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.
If I were being honest then I would say coming into English 102 my writing skills were worth a low C. Prior to English 102 writing for me would be very confusing and stressful. As I read the short stories and drama in class my writing started to improve because I saw different angles and point of views that a writer has to offer to his/her audience. Comprehension is a skill set I have lacked in most of my life until I began to read in English 102. When reading Shakespeare, I had to learn how to breakdown the different elements of the story to the point of my best understanding. By doing this it allowed me to deepen my thoughts and surpass the level of confusion I had been receiving in my prior English classes. I now realize that to comprehend fully I might have to write down what I think I read, then re-read to make sure I am right. Also writing about the things I have read increased my comprehension skill set because it allowed me to express my ideas as well as learn the authors point of view and concepts.
