During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence.
Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible. One key factor that helped my writing development was the five intensive papers that we wrote through the progress

A clear example of this is my definition paper. In my definition paper I was prompted to define the meaning of happiness using two videos, two articles, and a report. Nevertheless, I had to convey my own definition, and I was required to support my opinion with at least three different sources. Yes I struggled in that part, but our professor taught us to ask ourselves “why,” and “so what” whenever we are reading or watching something. This little tip helped me to sharpen my critical analytical skills. Now that I am constantly asking myself similar questions as to those of my professor, I am able to break every piece of writing into small topics. Thus, I can grasp the main idea of every writer easily. Not only I learned how to read critically, but I also learned how to identify different writing styles. To clarify, whenever I am in the process of breaking the information into small pieces, I have identified that certain authors have the same patterns in their writings. Their patterns help me make connections between my ideas and theirs. Besides, I have taken my writing to a new level because I can relate their own insights, and compare them with other authors who share the same pattern in their writings. I greatly improved my critical skills based on just one definition

PADM 302 Course Reflection My primary goals for this course were to improve my writing skills in two specific ways. I wanted to be able to write with greater speed, but with apparent quality, and I wanted to be clearer in my writing. I had two strategies in mind to meet these goals. The first included becoming proficient at writing outlines and frameworks, which, I thought, would help me better adhere to my objectives for the papers I write. The second strategy was to learn methods by which I could become more concise in writing which would enable me to more powerfully present the points I wish to deliver in papers.…

Aubrey Crosby was my teacher for English 102. Throughout the course of the semester we were taught how to write summaries, paraphrases, critiques, and research essays. These assignments taught the students how to effective communicate the information that was expressed in other articles. It also teaches students how to not plagiarize by requiring them to have citations for their information. The way the information was presented, the personality of Crosby, and the variety of assignments made this course effective in…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

In this English Express class Professor Williams has taught us to do and learn things in a way that we can understand it and not struggle with. Although some of us did still have a little trouble and struggled with some of the work she would have us work on. I personally struggled with the work she would have us do, but the one strategy that I would have the most trouble on was writing my essays especially essay #2. The second essay was difficult for me. I struggled on that essay more than the others specifically because Professor Williams wanted us to include 4 templates onto our essays to make it sound better, but I didn't know how to introduce them onto my essay and make them sound like it made sense.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

As an aspiring engineer, English is a subject that have never come easy to me. For my first two years of high school, I registered for A level English courses, as opposed to Honors level courses. Due to a lack of confidence developed from a naive lack of interest in the English, I was nervous that I would not fare well in the higher level courses. However, after a couple good years in lower level classes, I took a leap of faith and transitioned to Honors English. It was in honors English that I began to hone my reading and writing skills, but not after a rocky transition.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

Keep Writing Simple: Until recently, I was sure academic writing needed to be complex. I thought students who used big words and wrote long sentences appeared intelligent; however, that is incorrect (Grellier & Goerke, 2014). Since studying as an undergraduate, I have learned that formal writing requires a clear message with references that support ideas. I must apply the following principles to improve the quality of my writing.…
