Essay On Chinese Summer Camp Observation

Superior Essays
For my paper I was fortunate enough to be granted permission to observe some children at the Chinese summer camp where I went when I was younger, the counselors let me sit in and watch them entertain and educate the children from the corner of the classroom. The room was quite small but was able to accommodate me, four adults, 27 kids with ages ranging from 5 to 7, 30 adult size chairs, and a large table in the center. I was able to take more than an hour worth of notes during my stay there which focused on how the children behaved, reacted, and developed using terms from Child development.

While the counselors were preparing for the day’s session cleaning the whiteboard, cleaning the table, and handing out papers the children were busying

The counselors would say a phrase in Chinese like “Hello, how are you?” then the kids in return would say something back like “I am good, how about you?” and this would until they would run out of things to say then the adults would teach the children new words to use. Then the conversation would continue again then after some time the activity ended and it was time for lunch.

In regards to language and communication, the children’s’ behaviors were reflective of Semantic Development, which is a person’s understanding and realization of words, their meanings, and how to use them and this is tied to both receptive skills and productive/expressive skills. The children could process and understand what the adults were saying to them in Chinese and using their knowledge of the language they could produce a proper response.

In a single morning I was able to observe children who displayed various emotions, abilities regarding communication, several other traits as well. Based on what I’ve read in the textbook then children are seemingly developing quite well despite the incident. Thanks to this course I was able to learn much about child growth and development and likely this information will be useful should I one day need to take care of
