My Literacy Development

My Literacy development of Korean language began in my house. My parents read me story books ever since I was born, and continued reading the books until I was in my 2nd grade. My mother believed that reading books to children are one of the essential part of children's’ literacy development because it helps children create schemas early on in life which enhances language skills where I was able to use higher level vocabularies that I have learned through reading with my parents. I asked my mother when I started understanding words, and she told me she is not sure when because whenever she started reading the books to me, I would not keep my eyes off of the book; however, she said when I was 6 month old, she knew I was understand the stories …show more content…
my parents would then point to each one and tell me how to pronounce it and I would look and repeat with them. Later, when I memorized what consonant and vowel alphabets are, I learned how to say the words when consonant and vowels are combined. Before entering elementary school, I was able to read children's’ story books on my own and write simple words. I excelled in writing throughout my elementary school because ever since i could write, my father always made me write a journal about the book i have read or about my day to help me become better writer. I do not remember anything that I have learned in my english class when i was in korea except learning alphabet song. Throughout my three years of learning english, I learned just that. Because I did not have private tutor like others, I fell behind in english class since they expected students to know and have learned the sound of the alphabets and phonics already and taught students how to write sentence so every 45 minutes of english class, i just doodled. My parents did not like the idea of being so dependent of private tutors and wanted me to study on my own; however, after three years of bring home poor grade in english, my parents decided to go to canada to study english for two years. When i attended school in Canada, I was placed in ESL program where they tested my english level and helped me improve my literacy skills from according to my english proficiency. My english level at the age of 10 was in preschool level and my esl teacher highly recommend me to get a tutor. When my parents saw how much i was struggling at school, my parents decided to take me to english after school program. In the after school program i remember teacher using the flashcards that had simple vowels written on the front and example of the vowels incorporated into words. I remember my teacher repeating the vowels over and over again so I would never forget her
