Importance Of Observation In Child Development

Observing a child has always been a fascinating experience. It is amazing to see how differently children act in regards to child development theories. I recently observed a 4 year old little girl who I babysit periodically. My observation was conducted after school at the school I am contracted at. For the purposes of confidentiality the name of the little girl has been changed to Kaiya. I observed Kaiya the week of February 15-19 after school from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Kaiya has two older siblings and has just started Pre-Kindergarten this year after being in a home setting for the past three and half years. She was born December 04, 2011, and is now four years and three months old.
II. Physical Development Kaiya has fantastic fine motor skills, which involve physical movements with her hands and fingers. I observed her several days in a row turning pages of books, putting puzzles together, working at a computer, and playing a piano with no problem or hesitation. One of the days of observation Kaiya sat down at the piano and pressed the keys of the piano without any problem. On the last day of my observation, we sat down at the computer and I observed

On the days that I observed Kaiya I was able to see how she fits into the stages of cognitive development, one particular day that really stands out to me was a few days into the observation as I picked her up from Pre-K she started down the hallway like a cat. She played cat for about half the time that I observed her. Piaget regarded this sort of play under representational thinking. Kaiya exhibits a lot of behaviors that fit into the preoperational stages she can count to 20 but skips 16 and understands the concept of numbers and how they work. From what I have observed Kaiya will transition smoothly into the next stage of cognitive

The Sensorimotor stage includes six sub stages as well, which helps better explain what is happening with the child at each month of age. During Tertiary Circular Reactions which are at 12 - 18 months the infant is exploring new objects, and exploring what they can be used for, problem solving skills are also starting to form (Vettor, 2016). The activity garden offers an area where infants can match shapes with spots they belong in, help them match colours, and animals. It allows them areas to practice their new problem solving skills, and strengthen them. There is also the Beginning of Symbolic Representation at 18-24 months where infants can use representation to internalize or picture the world mentally and think about an object that they see, as well as representations which can be used to guide future conduct for the importance of problem solving, and symbolic play (Vettor, 2016).…

My field work experience had started in the preschool and where I have done the majority of my observations thus far. In the preschool I was beginning to understand how the different of components of the preschool all had concepts of phycology through all aspects of the classroom. During my time I saw how Piaget’s stages of cognitive development, how students handled new information through various methods, and Vygotsky’s sociocultural perspective are incorporated through different sections of the classroom. The classroom was based that learning should not be a structured experience, but learning should be developed through play and exploration.…

This study chose to, “examine the potential intergenerational transmission of social skills and psychosocial problems (i.e., loneliness and anxiety) among a sample of 255 father-mother-adult child triads,” (Burke et al., 2013). Burke, Woszidlo, & Sergin (2013) argued that one of the primary places to learn any kind of social skills is in a family setting. How a parent communicates with others arounds them can influence their child and can even go as far as predicting what kind of social skills their child will develop. This study focuses on young adult children as they are not only influenced by their parents, but also by their roommates and peers around them that could potential overrule the effects of the parental model (Burke et al., 2013).…

Initially, I was extremely nervous to perform the observations because I was unsure that I would be able to record all of the significant information into the running record fast enough. I also felt that it would be difficult to sit in one position and watch a child for twenty to ninety minutes. Once I completed my first multi-age observation, my nerves subsided because I realized that I was able to sufficiently record the child’s behaviors and actions in the running record, and the time passed by quicker than I had expected. Throughout the ten hours of observations, I discovered that the years of early childhood are extremely crucial to children’s development and significant changes take place in each stage. I was able to see these changes and developments, while completing the multi-age observations.…
