Observing a child has always been a fascinating experience. It is amazing to see how differently children act in regards to child development theories. I recently observed a 4 year old little girl who I babysit periodically. My observation was conducted after school at the school I am contracted at. For the purposes of confidentiality the name of the little girl has been changed to Kaiya. I observed Kaiya the week of February 15-19 after school from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Kaiya has two older siblings and has just started Pre-Kindergarten this year after being in a home setting for the past three and half years. She was born December 04, 2011, and is now four years and three months old.
II. Physical Development Kaiya has fantastic fine motor skills, which involve physical movements with her hands and fingers. I observed her several days in a row turning pages of books, putting puzzles together, working at a computer, and playing a piano with no problem or hesitation. On the days that I observed Kaiya I was able to see how she fits into the stages of cognitive development, one particular day that really stands out to me was a few days into the observation as I picked her up from Pre-K she started down the hallway like a cat. She played cat for about half the time that I observed her. Piaget regarded this sort of play under representational thinking. Kaiya exhibits a lot of behaviors that fit into the preoperational stages she can count to 20 but skips 16 and understands the concept of numbers and how they work. From what I have observed Kaiya will transition smoothly into the next stage of cognitive
