    Roan Mountain Case Study

    On 7 February 2017 at 1400 a windshield survey was conducted in Roan Mountain, TN; the temperature was a pleasant 70 degrees. Roan Mountain is a town located in the Appalachian Mountains on the side of the mountain it is named for. The valley it occupies is surrounded by amazingly beautiful and diverse landscape and scenery. The population of Roan Mountain is Caucasian and has varying ages. During the windshield survey, roughly 13 people were seen out of doors. Two older gentlemen were doing yard work, three middle aged people were shopping at a grocery store, two were purchasing gasoline at the convenience store, two were walking along the river next to the park, and the remaining were witnessed walking from vehicles into various establishments. Roan Mountain has Doe Creek flowing straight though the town, its flowing waters traveling by two parks with playground equipment, and one skate park. The mountain air was fresh and a wonderful change from Johnson City. The housing was on average older. It ranged from the 1950’s to the 1990’s with a few newer builds scattered around the outskirts on larger parcels of land. Most homes were traditional frame houses, but on some of the dirt roads with dead ends, trailers could be found in varying states of disrepair. Surprisingly, Roan Mountain has a medical center with basic health care services and EMT support, a pharmacy, volunteer firefighting, and an animal hospital.
