South Sudan seceded from Sudan in July 2011 and became an independent country. trouble began in July 2013 and when president Salva Kiir, amongst tensions and rumors of corruption, dismissed his entire cabinet including vice president Riek Machar. in December 2013, 500 died and 800 were wounded in the failed coup attempt by soldiers loyal to former vice president Machar. This marked the beginning of the current conflict. a ceasefire assigned to go into effect January 24th after over 3 weeks of violence that forced over 200,000 from their homes and left over 1000 dead. The ceasefire doesn't last long with reports of fighting just Weeks Later. In April 2014, the Bentiu massacre occurs, which is described as The worst massacre of the ongoing Civil War. August 25th 2015 the United Nations estimates that 2.2 million people have been displaced and South Sudan is facing food shortages and diseases due to the conflict. a later president Salva Kiir Signs a peace deal with Rebel leader Riek Machar. in an effort to end the Civil War Machar is reinstated as vice president. Fighting and dead continue even as as both leaders call for a ceasefire vice president Machar is removed from office again on July 23, 2016. on February 20, 2017, famine is formally declared in parts of Unity State, Where 100,000 face starvation.
