The Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebel group based in Sierra Leone is well known for their continuous dependency on children to fight against the government. Most of these children are abducted or manipulated into joining the ranks of RUF where they are tasked with fighting on the front lines and forced to commit atrocities such as rape and mutilation. The rebel group RUF is not the only military group to be using children, the Sierra Leone government has admitted 1/5 of its 250,000 strong army as being children. The United Nations Observer mission in Sierra Leone ( UNOMSIL) was United Nations reaction towards human rights violations in Sierra Leone. UNOMSIL was instrumental in disarming child soldiers, rehabilitating child soldiers into society, teaching the public about human rights and setting up the special court for Sierra Leone to try war criminals. The United Nations were equally successful in stopping children's rights violations in South Sudan. The UN approached the Child soldier crisis in South Sudan by negotiating with both the government forces and rebel groups on the release of child soldiers working under them. Surprisingly the military groups released some of the child soldiers under their command which totalled to almost 1,757 children. The UN has proven itself to be very successful in dealing with human rights violations as proven by the success of both peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and Sierra
