Jennifer is a stubby, four foot eight woman, in her mid-thirties. She is toothless, and her lower jaw whirls from side to side when she produces her puncturing high-pitched sounds. In the center of her scraggly light brown hair, she has a bald spot while the hair at the back of her head is short and frizzy, like a poodle's hair. Jennifer also wears a pair of glasses that are crooked and lopsided and only half the glasses slip down to her nose as she puts them on. She wears khaki pants with several pockets on them, black withered boots, and a long oversized olive colored winter coat with black fur around the hood. Every morning Jennifer plods to Queens Pita, with a medium sized cup of coffee, a navy blue messenger bag with scraps of paper creeping out and a large tattered red duffle bag. Once there, she leans up against the shop waiting for the owner to open up. In the meantime, with her deranged looking hawk eyes, Jennifer watches other New Yorkers who scurry off trying to catch the bus. She doesn’t always wear her glasses on the street and without them she has a crazy, unfocused stare. No one seems to make eye contact with her, other than an occasional homeless person. And even the homeless people turn and look away. Meanwhile, Jennifer sips her coffee, savoring each sip, holding onto the cup ever so tightly, as if the hot drink is her only source of heat for the day. By noon, Jennifer is hunched over and curled into a ball, in between the Donald Duck and horse coin…

Lois Lowry implements elements of symbolism throughout The Giver series, some elements more obvious than others. The red sled, the color blue and the Forest all consist of a…

product I should continue using; and even if they are recyclable, I should strive to lower my usage as the recycling process contributes to the emissions issue and part of the on-going problem with climate change. It was on an early morning during the fall, a Monday. We were all getting ready for a “long” trip. The four of us, each carrying a thick, heavy duffle bag. Cramming in our oversized bags, only two could fit in the trunk of our small white sedan. The sedan was about as small as a smart car. We decided to put the remaining bags at our feet. “Shotgun,” I yelled. In the back of my mind, I knew calling for the front passenger seat was a bad idea when I saw one of the duffle bag taking up the whole…

With political debates centering around greater environmental issues such as climate change, air pollution, and the alleged fifth mass-extinction, a dog-owner may wonder why signs saying “please pick up after your dog” are appearing more and more in neighborhoods and parks. However, with 83 million dogs in the US producing 10.6 million tons of poo a year (Freinkel 2014), a contributor to the intensification of these greater environmental issues is the methane produced by this waste and the…

box of cereal. I am also tasked with taking out the garbage. It isn’t a hard job, but my grandma is set in her ways, so everything has to be done a certain way. For instance, the garbage in the bathroom, which is already in a white Walmart bag, must be dumped into a grey Walmart bag before being put in the large, white garbage bag from the kitchen. Additionally, things like banana peels cannot simply be thrown into the garbage. They must be wrapped in paper towel and put into a smaller bag, like…

Melissa dragged out the first bag from the big dumpster and poured it into the bathtub. It was a mushy mess and smelled as if someone died. In the tub there was tons of rubbery hamburger patties left, soggy fries and mushy bananas. We did this four more times, and found absolutely nothing besides leftovers and tons of unopened milk cartoons. In our boredom of trying to find my retainers, we created a fun game. We would open each milk carton and pour each one out over all the mush, it was quite…

Keep Midland Beautiful that I would volunteer at. They would always assign my group to a place where it would take about 20 minutes to pick up, and then we could leave. So, my first impression of this was that it wouldn’t take the two hours assigned and we could leave in no time. I was wrong. I had filled up two trash bags within the first hour! And at the end, there was at least 50 trash bags that everyone else gathered up. That’s not even counting the pieces of Styrofoam or even the tires that…

me to school cause he says I needed the exercise. Pffft. Even though the bus came right out side I still had to get dressed and pack my lunch and my school bag. So I hopped up and threw the covers back on my bed and walked over to my closet, opened it up and started to grab clothes. Buttoned blue shirt. Check. White khakis. Check. Black socks. Check. I grabbed my computer and stuffed it in my bag along with the science workbook. Oh yeah and when I said my dad tells me to just walk, he’s…
