Wildfires are natural disturbances that shape landscapes and can alter aquatic ecosystems and communities. Wildfires can be followed closely by flood events that cause debris flows and scouring, potentially compounding effects on aquatic systems. In 2011, the Horseshoe 2 Fire of southeast Arizona burned over 90,000 hectares of forest and was followed by massive monsoonal rains. These rains triggered flood events that scoured creek beds within the range. In one stream within the affected…
wastelands, despite their value to our environment, society and economy. Our wetlands are threatened by numerous activities. Global Warming Global warming has the potential to alter the structure and function of our wetlands. Sea level rise threatens to inundate many coastal wetlands, with little room to move inland because of coastal development. Warmer water from global warming will alter the species composition and contribute to worsening dead zones and harmful algal blooms, increased…
Uncontacted tribes face various threats from the outside world. These threats include destruction of homes, budget cuts, disease transmission, and tourism of their territory. These threats pose great dangers to the tribes, which may include sickness or even death. Many companies are beginning to build on the land that many tribes call “home,” causing tribes to lose shelter and food supply. Destruction of the homes of tribes create many problems which can lead to death of many tribe members.…
Hartford Civic Center collapsed on January 18th, 1978 when the weight of the 4.8 inches of snow proved to be too much for the structure to handle. The roof was supposed to be designed to withstand much larger load cases than this small amount of snow. Fortunately, no one was injured as the roof fell at 4 o’clock in the morning. There are several relevant parties involved in this case. The first is the architectural company, Vincent Kling & Associates. They were a well-known firm located on the…
to manipulate various agents into different physical forms. An attack of this kind can not only harm humans, but it can also have a negative impact on agriculture and livestock. Without these vital food sources, our population would rapidly decrease from starvation in addition to those who would die from disease. Biological agents are a continuous threat because most cannot be seen with the human eye, and these agents spread to new host rapidly. The United States government, along with other…
The goal of this lab was to compare the differences of temperature effect on a plant's growth rate. In this experiment, the materials used were water bottles, seeds, and cotton. One half-cut bottle with the seed was placed in room temperature, while the other in cold temperature. The plants were equally watered every other day after for 2 weeks (at the same time). Throughout this experiment, the results led to the conclusion that a plant placed in room temperature had a higher germination rate…
Why do some species only live in one part of the world, even though there are other environments which could be suitable? One outstanding case of a species surviving in one specific area is the kangaroos. This, can be called “The kangaroo question.” Kangaroos can only be found in Australia, even though there are several other habitable areas for them. Then why do some species only stay in an undivided field of nation? There could be many reasons for this phenomenon. The most…
way down into Chihuahua, Mexico (Chapin, 1994) (figure 1). The area has long been used by humans as a north south trade route and also goes by the name “El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro” (“The Royal Road of the Interior Land”). The understanding of this rift zone is also an area of importance because it contains valuable resources such as hydrocarbons, mineral deposits and groundwater, as well as human hazards, such as earthquakes (Baldridge, 1989). For us to understand geological formation…
Destruction of Animals’ Homes in the Rainforest Why haven’t we realized our mistakes yet? Why? Our carelessness and greed, has been impacting wildlife majorly. We are taking away the homes of the animals in the Rainforest, and they are dying off so fast, and soon they may even go extinct. Some of the major reasons as to why animals are losing their homes, are because of Habit Degradation. Pollution, and the disruption in the ecosystem processes, (like changing the intensity of fires), which have…
A dog, cat, and any other mammal you see today have a common ancestor with you and other humans. Scientists believe that evolution took place and can be proven through the homologous structures of prehistoric/modern whales and other mammals and DNA comparisons between species of mammals. The advancement of the whale species and their bone structures is an example of how evolution takes place in mammals. From the film “Morphed: When Whales Had Legs,” I took notes of how prehistoric whale species…
